As usual, season 5 of This Is Us<\/em><\/a> left fans wanting more. During the finale, which aired in May 2021, there were lots of flashbacks and reveals, including how Kate Pearson (Chrissy Metz<\/strong><\/a>) and Toby (Chris Sullivan<\/strong>) are no longer together. Instead, she is now getting married to her music teacher boss, Phillip (Chris Geere<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, five years in the future, Randall (Sterling K. Brown<\/strong>) is getting some recognition in the media, while Nicky (Griffin Dunne<\/strong>) is married.<\/p>\n

Despite all of the changes, Metz, 41, believes that season 6<\/a> \u2014 which airs on Tuesday, January 4 \u2014 will end on a high note.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do think [fans] will find some closure<\/a> and some contentment with what transpires and how [creator] Dan Fogelman<\/strong> wraps everything up,\u201d the actress told Page Six<\/em><\/a>. \u201cOh, [Kate\u2019s] gonna have a season! I think that\u2019s what\u2019s so amazing, is the way that they both have impacted each other\u2019s lives. You keep that with you forever. You\u2019re forever changed by moments and memories and people.”<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, I think they\u2019ll always be in each other\u2019s lives and always respect and love each other. But the unraveling, it\u2019s going to be hard, and I think people are going to understand that nobody\u2019s right, nobody\u2019s wrong. It\u2019s like, you either grow together, or you grow apart,” she said of Toby and Kate’s bond.<\/p>\n

Sullivan added that the finale \u201cwill be comforting and it will be satisfying<\/a>,” and \u201cToby\u2019s going to be fine. It\u2019s going to hurt, but he\u2019s going to be fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to land this plane, everyone\u2019s going to be taken care of, and every storyline\u2019s going to get wrapped up in a nice bow,\u201d he continued. \u201cEveryone should be satisfied \u2013 even if it\u2019s not ending the way they want it to<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sullivan understands that fans will be upset that the NBC hit show is coming to an end after six wonderful years. “Life hurts 50 percent of the time. And I think when we\u2019re hurting, we forget that life is excellent the other 50 percent of the time,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd then when it\u2019s excellent, we kind of think it\u2019s never going to hurt again, and then when it hurts again, we\u2019re disappointed. But this is the way it goes.”<\/p>\n

Metz hasn’t processed that she will be saying goodbye to Kate in the near future<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cI personally cannot be mentally prepared for something that\u2019s completely changed my life in ways that I never, ever, ever thought it would,” she shared.<\/p>\n
