Do you remember that one scene in The Devil Wears Prada<\/em>\u00a0where the Runway fashion team is at a private press preview for James Holt, and Nigel breaks down the many facial expression-based reviews of Miranda? “There’s only been one actual smile on record and that was Tom Ford in 2001.”\u00a0<\/em>Well in regards to Christopher John Rogers Pre-Fall 2022, that’s how we feel\u2014it just instantly brings the most joyous smile. That’s the magic of Christopher John Rogers (CJR)! He makes garments that are effervescent, incredibly refined and elegant, yet evoke undertones of playfulness and ease. Pre-fall 2022\u2014dubbed Collection 009\u2014 is a continuation of the house codes Rogers and his atelier have come to be known for. Rainbow color wheel palette? Check! A juxtaposition of early 18th century silhouettes, meets 70s, meets 80s? Check! Luxe organzas, taffetas, and silks? Check! And immaculate tailoring and construction? Check!<\/p>\n

CJR is in a class all by himself\u2014referencing himself, his southern upbringing and the plethora of beautiful muses that live in his fantastical world, every season. One of the amazing things about the CJR atelier, is that they’re creating their own signatures to reference back to, their own archives. It’s their own world and they harken back to previous seasons, building upon these signatures every other season. Take the strawberry skirt\u2014that has become synonymous with the house\u2014this season, in look 10, they expanded upon that signature, this time in a neutral color (with rainbow threading\u2014genius). Pre-Fall 2022′ also touches on the CJR approach to making all facets of the collection just as special as the next. From a minimal black knit dress with deep plunging neckline bordered in the signature rainbow color wheel, to an off white\/creme cotton and knit dress with buckle webbed loop straps, opera gloves and a knit ball skirt\u2014each look has intention.<\/p>\n

Look 33 is truly exceptional. It’s a racerback twill dress with this paint splattered print that instantly brings to mind the work of Black abstractionist of yesterday like Sam Gilliam or Norman Lewis. Rogers, easily borders this line between wearable art and wearable-irl clothes. These are clothes that emote-that make you feel something! In a world of trends, celebrity driven aesthetics and clothes without intention, Christopher John Rogers is a refuge. It’s a wonder emporium! It’s no wonder why some of the most iconic people in the world have turned to him for their biggest moments. These are clothes that not only are exceptionally constructed, but they instantly exude joy. To wear a CJR garment is to be impeccably dressed and the life of the party at the same time.<\/p>\n
