The first excerpt<\/a> of Finding Freedom<\/em> <\/a>\u2013 the new book from royal reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand \u2013 reads decidedly in favor of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle\u2019s decision to step back as senior members of the British Royal family.<\/a> Interestingly, it claims it was indeed the Duke of Sussex \u2013 and not his wife \u2013 who wanted to leave that world.<\/p>\n

\u201cFundamentally, Harry wanted out,\u201d a source told Durand and Scobie. \u201cDeep down he was always struggling within that world. She\u2019s [Meghan] opened the door for him on that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c[Prince Harry] wanted to get away from the goldfish bowl that was Kensington Palace,\u201d the source said of the couple\u2019s decision to move their family to Windsor. \u201cEverywhere you turn, you\u2019re surrounded by staff and family. He was at a point in his life where he was working with his brother, doing the foundation with his brother and living by his brother. It was too much.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t need to have that movie moment where we get out of a car and wave to a hundred photographers before going into a building,\u201d Prince Harry reportedly told a friend after the couple flew to Canada in 2019. \u201cIt should just be about the work happening inside. Let\u2019s focus on what really matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the reporters\u2019 sources, the couple did attempt to air their grievances with the institution but it fell on deaf ears ultimately resulting in the couple growing impatient. \u201cIf other members of the family and those working with the households had taken their requests more seriously, it wouldn\u2019t have reached that point,\u201d the authors write.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile they both respected the hierarchy of the institution, it was difficult when they wanted to focus on a project and were told that a more senior ranking family member, be it Prince William or Prince Charles, had an initiative or tour being announced at the same time \u2013 so they would just have to wait,\u201d the book reads.<\/p>\n

With little support from those around her, including Kate Middleton,<\/a> Markle became very sad and reportedly tearfully told a friend in March. \u201cI gave up my entire life for this family. I was willing to do whatever it takes. But here we are. It\u2019s very sad.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the authors, Markle found it difficult to see her husband stripped of his honorary military appointments. “It’s the one that made Harry emotional,” writes the reporters.<\/p>\n
