Lipsticks, rosy tints and glosses have been beautiful little items by which to decorate our mundane days of late; luxury indulgences to spruce up a WFH desk set-up or a 3pm Zoom meeting. Yes, amid the coronavirus health crisis, lipsticks have been compact beacons of glamour, escapism and a reminder that better days are to come.<\/p>\n

This notion is nothing new. As GRAZIA\u2019s beauty editor Emily Algar pointed to a couple of months ago<\/a>, the lipstick index or lipstick effect is a phenomenon that is very much in full flight at the moment. \u201cAfter the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York City, Est\u00e9e Lauder Chairman Leonard Lauder spoke about an increase in the brand\u2019s lipstick sales \u2013 theorizing that when times are tough and spending is limited, people may look towards little luxuries (like lipsticks) to add a sense of normalcy or hope to an otherwise bleak period,\u201d she writes.<\/p>\n

With the rise of the mandatory mask, however, there are some whispers on certain channels that the rise in lipstick sales will soon be replaced by beauty products that accentuate the eyes; lashes, eyeliners, mascaras.
