There is a lexicon of iconic cultural images that preserve moments in time and act as monikers of bygone eras. Cultural image makers such as Andy Warhol<\/a>, Ming Smith, Kwame Brathwaite, Gordon Parks and Bill Bernstein, all have been tasked with documenting culture, fashion and nightlife\u2014creating images that continue to live on. And now, there’s a new name to add to that list; Tyrell Hampton<\/a>. The bi-coastal, emerging photographer and filmmaker, is carrying the touch for capturing that young, spontaneous energy\u2014creating images that evokes a sense of movement and life, capturing subjects amidst moments of joy and unbridled exuberance. For it’s inaugural not-for-profit gallery show, SN37<\/a>, presents “Go Home”<\/em>, an exhibition by Tyrell Hampton at the Seaport. The show, which features a primarily black and white selection of Tyrell<\/span>\u2019s images of partygoers, is a nod to Tyrell<\/span>\u2019s initiation into city life as a teenager first experiencing New York City. Channeling the essence of image makers of yesteryear like Meryl Meisle, or Tina Paul, this show sees Hampton speaking to the exuberance and fantasy of NYC and the need for community. On view from November 20, 2021 through January 9, 2022, guest will be able to experience Hampton’s curation of intimate images of the magic of nightlife, in SN37’s beautiful new, expansive white box location at the Seaport.<\/p>\n

SN37 is dedicated to representing a new era of multifaceted image makers, offering programming that\u00a0fosters a welcoming and inclusive environment for all viewers to engage with the arts. With a roster of diverse talent such as\u00a0Shaniqwa Jarvis, Adrienne Raquel, Luke Gilford and Micaiah Carter,\u00a0their\u00a0new gallery space, located at the Seaport, continues to expand on their commitment to facilitating and fostering a diverse group of image makers and breaking down the often pretentious parameters of the arts; bringing community and the arts to the NYC area.\u00a0With support from The Howard Hughes Corporation, a longtime champion of the New York art community, the gallery will act as a stationary, revolving installation, with\u00a0four rotating exhibitions in total, remaining open into 2022. In addition, proceeds from each exhibition\u00a0will be donated to an organization of the artist\u2019s choosing.\u00a0For Tyrell’s show, he’s selected the prestigious Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation, as his organization of choice\u2014which\u00a0speaks to his background as a classically trained dancer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tyrell Hampton is a rapidly emerging image maker who’s lens centers his own experiences. As a classically trained dancer, his work often echos the movement and rhythmic fluidity of the discipline. The Philly native, likens “moving through the dark room of a club to creating choreography: anticipating the moves of those around you and responding with your own rhythm.” <\/em>His candid portraits of partygoers harken back to the days of Studio 54, with the organic capture of joy, movement and community. This is Hampton’s sweet-spot! He is at the zeitgeist of youth culture. This had led him to documenting of the moment cultural figures like Lizzo to Hailey Bieber, Dua Lipa, & Miley Cyrus\u2014 and putting his own unique spin on campaigns for Louis Vuitton, Adidas, Coach and Calvin Klein. He is sersiulsy one to watch and this show is proof of that. “Go Home”<\/em> is like a physical representation of Hampton’s diary in a sense. From the images of the glittering night life\u2014which has long fascinated him from tv and film to reality\u2014 to a video installation of him dancing in the studio and various screen-test of people in movement or in preparation for a night out, this show offers a rare glimpse into the personal world of Hampton, while speaking to the need for community and safe spaces at large.<\/p>\n

SN37 has made an intentional decision to donate the proceeds of each exhibition to the organization of their artists\u2019 choosing; the proceeds from Tyrell<\/span>\u2019s show will be donated to the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation to provide vital scholarship assistance dedicated for male students to receive superior training at the prestigious,\u00a0The Ailey School<\/a>.<\/p>\n
