The terms of Britney Spears\u2019 longstanding conservatorship have been under a magnifying glass in recent weeks with many believing the popstar is being unnecessarily tracked and controlled by her father, James \u201cJamie\u201d Spears.<\/p>\n

The pop icon, now 38, was placed on involuntary psychiatric hold in 2008 and as a result Mr. Spears became a conservator over his daughter\u2019s $60 million fortune. Under the law, Mr. Spears, 68, is reportedly required \u201cto sign off on every major decision [Spears] makes, from business, to health, to voting and marriage,\u201d a type of guardianship usually reserved for people who cannot take of themselves. A 2016 New York Times<\/em><\/a> report revealed that even her Starbucks and iTunes purchases were being turned over to the court.<\/p>\n

The unique case recently garnered widespread attention when Spears\u2019 brother Bryan spoke out about the arrangement in July saying his sister has \u201calways wanted to get out of it.\u201d Many fans have posted comments on Spears\u2019 Instagram telling her to wear a certain color in her next post should she need help.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll these conspiracy theorists don\u2019t know anything. The world don\u2019t have a clue,\u201d Mr. Spears explained. \u201cIt\u2019s up to the court of California to decide what\u2019s best for my daughter. It\u2019s no one else\u2019s business.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have to report every nickel and dime spent to the court every year. How the hell would I steal something?\u201d he continued. \u201cI love my daughter. I love all my kids. But this is our business. It\u2019s private.\u201d<\/p>\n

A change.org petition titled Britney Spears: right to her own lawyer<\/a> is currently doing the rounds arguing that the this type of conservatorship is usually reserved for elderly people or “severely mentally ill individuals.” Having toured the world for several years and held down a residency in Vegas, the petition\u2019s creator Max Morgan says Spears does not fit this bill and needs to be able to legally hire her own representation to \u201cfight for her freedom.\u201d It currently has 247,000 signatures.<\/p>\n
