Does it get any-more quintessential New York City<\/a> than the site specific, graffiti inspired work of Keith Haring? The prolific\u00a0artist and activist, who dedicated his practice to social works and public accessible art, is once again at the center of a public-works initiative. As an accompaniment to the forthcoming programming of the New York City Center’s<\/a> 2021-2022 season,\u00a0a never- before-seen in New York, panel by Haring and long-time collaborator Angel Ortiz (LA II), is now available for public viewing. Installed in City Center\u2019s Shuman Lounge, ‘Fiorucci Walls’<\/em>, created as a site-specific performance on October 9, 1983 at the iconic Fiorucci Store in Milan, Italy, marks a sort of homecoming, as this is the first time this specific panel is on view in New York. Guest of the New York City Center, will get to see the rare panel during their performances during intermission throughout the center’s 2021-2022 season; taking in art in the halls while watching art on stage.<\/p>\n

‘Fiorucci Walls’<\/em>, on loan from the MACo Museum of Chang Mai, Thailand<\/a>, was commissioned in\u00a01983, by legendary fashion designer Elio Fiorucci. The designer invited Haring to Milan to turn his store into a work of art, stripping his 5,000 square foot store bare, creating a blank wall canvas. Haring painted the shop in 13 hours, working overnight with his friend and collaborator LA II, accompanied by the tunes of DJ Maurizio Marisco. When the installation came down in 1984, Fiorucci saved the panels keeping them in storage for decades, restoring them in 1991.\u00a0This fashion x art collaboration, fit perfectly into the ethos of Haring and his connection to the fashion scene. Inspired by graffiti art, Haring\u2014an influential part of the New York art scene during the 1980s\u2014began drawing in New York\u2019s subway stations, filling empty advertising spaces with chalk drawings with the aim to make art accessible to everyone. This public-works showing, aligns perfectly with City Center\u2019s founding mission to make the arts accessible to everyone. As Manhattan\u2019s first performing arts center, City Center has been a staple in the fabric of arts & culture in NYC since its inception in 1943.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In addition, City Center will host four visit dates for the public to view Fiorucci Walls: Friday, October 29: Noon-6pm<\/strong> Saturday, October 30: Noon-6pm<\/strong> Friday, November 5: Noon-6pm<\/strong> Saturday, November 6: Noon-6pm.\u00a0<\/strong>For more information about public viewing days, visit NYCityCenter.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n
