It was a kind of mirroring of the tuberculosis plot line of\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Moulin\u00a0Rouge!<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0\u00a0 Thank God his wasn\u2019t a tragic ending and he\u2019s back on the boards breaking hearts with his soaring ballads and the sweetness he\u2019s found in Christian\u2019s swagger.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:400,&quot;335559740&quot;:1160}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Kevin Sessums:\u00a0 What\u00a0is so interesting\u00a0with\u00a0what you\u2019re doing in\u202fMoulin\u00a0Rouge!,\u00a0Aaron,\u00a0is that in this show that is\u00a0so\u00a0 big\u00a0and busy, you do this\u00a0really smart\u00a0thing.\u00a0 You. Pull. It. All. The. Way. In.\u00a0 You\u00a0are so simple and still in this.\u00a0 And\u00a0\u2013\u00a0forgive me\u00a0\u2013\u00a0rather sweet.\u00a0 I\u00a0don\u2019t want to say you\u2019re Tinkerbell.\u00a0 That\u2019s too f**king twee.\u00a0 But in all this brassy brightness you are this small ray of pure light.\u00a0 Are you aware of\u00a0being\u00a0\u00a0sprite-like almost\u00a0in your portrayal of Christian?\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Aaron Tveit:\u00a0 That\u2019s\u00a0amazing that you say that.\u00a0 I thought about this and worked a long time trying to find just that because I always viewed the character of Christian as a stranger in a strange land.\u00a0 He\u2019s Dorothy in Oz. He gets to this place where he\u2019s expecting all his wildest dreams and then it\u2019s more than that.\u00a0 You can\u2019t rise above that.\u00a0\u00a0So\u00a0you kind of\u00a0have to\u00a0be the observer.\u00a0 I think of myself\u00a0as\u00a0the audience\u2019s eyes\u00a0\u2013\u00a0especially since we\u2019ve been open on Broadway.\u202f\u00a0My relationship with the audience is the thing I\u2019ve really worked hard at and to find places where, when all this stuff is going on, that the audience can look\u00a0to\u00a0me to see how to react.\u00a0That\u00a0 relationship\u00a0with the audience is always on my mind.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:400,&quot;335559740&quot;:680}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I\u00a0also\u00a0thought it was\u00a0really interesting\u00a0making Christian American as opposed to English\u00a0\u2013\u00a0as he was in the film\u00a0\u2013\u00a0and what it means to be an American in 1899 from Lima, Ohio, who finds himself in\u00a0bohemian Paris.\u00a0 The history of these things\u00a0fascinate\u00a0me.\u00a0 What does that mean?\u00a0 What does that look like?\u00a0 How did he get there?\u00a0 Because obviously he\u2019s this artistic soul from a place with no artistic soul.\u00a0 Everything is about the railroad and steel and America\u2019s Manifest Destiny and the industrial revolution.\u00a0 I have just always thought that this guy for whatever reason\u00a0\u2013\u00a0maybe his mom was\u00a0singer\u00a0and his dad was telling him he couldn\u2019t be true to himself\u00a0\u2013\u00a0he has this idea and this belief inside himself that there is somewhere\u00a0out there\u00a0where what he feels will make sense.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:400,&quot;335559740&quot;:680}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>KS:\u00a0 You\u00a0could\u00a0be\u00a0describing the\u00a0ur-story of young people coming to cities to find themselves in artistic ways.\u00a0 Is that your story?\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">AT:\u00a0 Yeah, it is. The only difference was for that\u00a0me\u202f\u00a0I\u00a0had both parents saying I could do it. My dad once told me when I was kind of thinking about auditioning for theatre when I was already in college that he had almost moved to Nashville when he was 18 to be a country singer, but he never went.\u00a0\u00a0I knew that my dad had a great voice and was a great singer, but I never knew that.\u00a0 I had no idea.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:400,&quot;335559740&quot;:480}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0I started playing the violin when I was four.\u00a0 I was always musical.\u00a0 The first time I remember someone responding to my voice I was in elementary school chorus in fourth or fifth grade and before the concert the chorus teacher told me to sing louder.\u00a0\u00a0 And then it wasn\u2019t until I got to the 9th grade\u00a0and\u202f\u00a0the\u00a0high school chorus at my high school that everyone took notice.\u00a0 The upperclassmen.\u00a0 Everybody.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:400,&quot;335559740&quot;:680}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I grew up in upstate New York.\u00a0\u00a0It was great.\u00a0 In my head I thought I had the most suburban childhood, but when I look back on\u00a0it\u00a0I think it was fascinating being so close to New York.\u00a0\u00a0I think I had been to every museum in the city by the time I was 15.\u00a0 I\u00a0got\u00a0to see Broadway shows all the time on school trips.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:400,&quot;335559740&quot;:680}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The first Broadway musical I saw was\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Jekyll and Hyde<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0 And then I saw\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ragtime<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I remember being very, very struck the first time Audra McDonald walked onto that stage in\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ragtime.<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0 Then\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Les Mis<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0 And when I was a senior in high school when I was really figuring out if I were going to go to school and study business or if I was going to sing, I saw\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Rent<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0 I was really struck by that because it was the first\u00a0time\u00a0I\u2019d had ever seen any kind of contemporary music onstage.\u00a0 It just had this young sensibility.\u00a0 The other\u00a0stuff\u00a0felt so unattainable.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:400,&quot;335559740&quot;:680}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Two years later\u00a0somehow\u00a0I was doing the show on tour.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I loved it.\u00a0 I was 19 turning 20 with\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Rent<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202fand then 20 turning 21 in\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Hairspray<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202fon the tours that I did.\u00a0 I mean, I had nothing\u00a0to\u00a0my name besides what was in my suitcase.\u00a0 I was able to see the country that way.\u00a0 I think I\u2019ve been to 48 of the 50 states.\u202f\u00a0 I have never been to\u00a0Alaska. And randomly, I\u2019ve never been to Arkansas.\u00a0 But what a wonderful thing to have experienced.\u00a0 I was a music major for a year at Ithaca College then switched into an acting program, but I didn\u2019t really get cast in anything.\u00a0 But then I got this job as Steve in\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Rent<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0 And I was the youngest in that company by at least three years.\u00a0 Wait. More like five probably.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Just to figure out how to do eight shows a week was an education while I was understudying the two leads Roger and Mark.\u00a0\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:400,&quot;335559740&quot;:680}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>KS:\u00a0\u00a0 I always look for the incongruous in art and in life.\u00a0 I\u00a0even\u00a0find\u00a0a sense of\u00a0the\u00a0\u00a0sacred\u00a0there,\u00a0\u00a0Your\u00a0character of Christian\u00a0in\u00a0Moulin Rouge!\u00a0is the incongruous element in the\u00a0narrative of this musical.\u00a0 But there is also the incongruity of the music itself being modern yet being sung in 1899 Paris.\u00a0 How do you navigate that incongruity of the music being of a different time than the setting?\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">AT:\u00a0 This\u00a0show to me could be done in two parts almost.\u00a0 I look on the first act and the second act as two very different entities. For me the kind of run of the second act for me\u00a0\u2013\u00a0the run of\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Chandelier<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Roxanne<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Crazy\/Rolling in the Deep<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, to the end of the play\u00a0\u2013\u00a0all of\u00a0those pop songs work 100% as a narrative for what my character is going through.\u00a0 So that just made total sense to me.\u00a0 The period stuff doesn\u2019t bother me.\u00a0 Luckily, I have the film in my head and the film messes with the period so much. It\u2019s 1899 Bohemia, but it\u2019s so now.\u00a0 Alex [Timbers, the director of\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Moulin\u00a0Rouge!<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">] and I talked a lot about\u00a0that\u00a0and he is so wonderful about creating time and place and atmosphere, as\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Moulin\u00a0Rouge!<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0proves as you sit in the theatre experiencing it.\u00a0 He told us all that he would keep us in balance.\u00a0 And he has.\u00a0 I turn that over to him a lot.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:400,&quot;335559740&quot;:680}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I would like to think I am easily directed.\u00a0\u00a0 I have had the benefit of having worked with incredible theatre directors and yet they all direct differently.\u00a0 Alex is very much looking at the big picture, but lets you blossom into the role while keeping you in that balance.\u00a0 Michael Greif, who directed me in\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Next to Norma<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">l, hands you a\u00a0Post-It\u00a0note with a verb on it.\u00a0 Jack O\u2019Brien, who directed me in\u202f<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Catch Me If You Can,\u202f<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">will say to you,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Okay, say this line.\u00a0 Turn to the audience.\u00a0 Count to three.\u00a0 And turn back.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0And\u00a0all of a sudden\u00a0you get an eruption of\u00a0laughter\u00a0and you wonder how\u00a0did that just happen. I have been able to work with these brilliant, brilliant stage directors and brilliant theatrical minds and they all go about it a different way. I want to\u00a0do\u00a0more television and more\u00a0film.\u00a0 But I think no matter what, that this\u00a0\u2013\u00a0the theatre\u00a0\u2013\u202f\u00a0will\u00a0always be where I land.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:400,&quot;335559740&quot;:680}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>KS:\u00a0 You\u00a0are very talented, don\u2019t get me wrong.\u00a0 But you hit the ground running very early.\u00a0 You\u2019ve had a career since you were 19.\u00a0 It\u2019s not even luck really.\u00a0 It\u2019s a kind of grace.\u202f\u00a0\u00a0Speaking of grace in your life\u00a0&#8211; and the sacred as I did earlier\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0your\u00a0brother is a Catholic priest.\u00a0 There are just the two of you as siblings in your family.\u00a0\u00a0What that\u2019s like\u00a0&#8211; having a priest as a brother?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">AT:\u00a0 He\u2019s a brilliant, fascinating guy.\u202f\u00a0\u00a0I wasn\u2019t surprised\u00a0that he became a priest.\u00a0\u00a0 We were raised\u00a0Catholic\u00a0and my family always went to church and my parents believe what they believe.\u00a0 They really like the community of it.\u00a0 My dad sang in the choir.\u00a0 But my brother from a young age was just a bit more serious about it.
