As she tells\u00a0<i>Grazia USA\u00a0<\/i>contributor John Russell, her life in September 2021 could not be more different than it was a year ago. After taking some time off from acting to focus on music in her mid-20s, she\u2019s gone from relative obscurity to rising starlet seemingly overnight!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis period of time, in terms of change, can account for maybe five years of change [compared to] what I was used to previously, when things were changing at a\u00a0<i>very<\/i>\u00a0slow rate,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p><i>Gossip Girl\u00a0<\/i>has changed as well. While the original series focused on the glamorous lives of a clique of privileged, mostly white teens on Manhattan\u2019s Upper East Side, this new incarnation is a much more diverse show. The characters are still insanely wealthy, but they\u2019re browner, queerer, and much more politically engaged than their predecessors. All of which makes Alexander the face of a very different kind of teen drama\u2014and that suits her just fine. The biracial Canadian singer-songwriter\/actor is proudly queer and has never once considered \u201ckeeping her private life private\u201d for the sake of her career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just so funny,\u201d she explains, \u201cWhen people are like \u2018Keep your private life private,\u2019 I\u2019m like, \u2018Straight people don\u2019t.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fearless, outspoken Alexander is on the cusp of fame. With the final six episodes of Season 1 set to debut in November,\u00a0<i>Gossip Girl\u00a0<\/i>was recently renewed for a second season, and there are bound to be many more opportunities ahead for her to shine.
