It\u2019s the decree of the IMG Alliance, an initiative banding together 11 American designers in a collective pledge to show at New York Fashion Week for the next three seasons. \u201cWe\u2019re rebuilding the bedrock of New York Fashion Week,\u201d Noah Kozlowski,\u00a0director of\u00a0designer\u00a0relations for IMG,\u00a0tells\u00a0<\/span>Grazia\u00a0USA<\/span><\/i>. \u201cIn partnering with these designers through 2022, we\u2019re safely demonstrating the resilience and artistry of American fashion on a global stage.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In exchange for their commitment, each of the participating designers will receive funding from IMG to help finance their shows. \u201cThe designers who are showing here are, for the most part, independent and don\u2019t have the scale and level of support that some of their counterparts in Europe have,\u201d Kozlowski continued. \u201cSo, this initiative came about very organically, out of countless conversations we\u2019ve been having with designers over the past several months.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pre-pandemic,\u00a0there were countless\u00a0conversations\u00a0of a different nature:\u00a0regarding\u00a0the relevance and ROI of the shows,\u00a0the breakneck pace of the fashion calendar, the implications\u2014environmental and otherwise\u2014of a six-collections-per-year output, the sheer volume of\u00a0<\/span>stuff\u00a0<\/span><\/i>created in the name of newness. Then,\u00a0the\u00a0pandemic\u00a0hit\u00a0and an industry\u00a0often\u00a0pushed into\u00a0hyperspeed\u00a0was stopped dead in its tracks.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nearly two years\u00a0later,\u00a0we\u2019re picking up speed but\u00a0how it resumes\u00a0in earnest\u00a0remains to be seen.\u00a0For insight, we spoke with those who have their eyes on the horizon:\u00a0six designers taking part in fashion\u2019s great Reconstruction<\/span><\/p>\n

SERGIO: Tired!\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

GG:\u00a0I appreciate your honesty.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

SERGIO: You know what? I told my boyfriend last night, I said,\u00a0\u201cI’ve been complaining mentally because I don\u2019t allow myself to complain out of my mouth.\u201d\u00a0But then I sat back and thought,\u00a0\u201cYou know what? You need to stop complaining because two years ago you would’ve\u00a0been dying to have the problems that you have now.\u201d\u00a0Because on top of the show, we have the Met Gala.\u00a0So\u00a0I\u2019m grateful<\/span><\/b>\u2014<\/span><\/b>grateful and tired!<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

GG:\u00a0How has the pandemic shifted your perspective in terms of how you see your business?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

SERGIO: I think the pandemic offered to fashion an opportunity for us to write our own story and to allow our business to run how we want our business to run\u2014how\u00a0you deliver, how you produce your collections, when you produce your collections. I think that’s opened the door for people to be more allowed to do that.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

GG:\u00a0There\u2019s\u00a0a push-pull because in some ways fashion is a very traditional business, but it\u2019s filled with forward-thinkers.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

SERGIO: Right, and it\u2019s never a perfect science. We talked during COVID\u00a0and said,\u00a0\u201cOh, we\u2019re not going to push for six collections a year anymore.\u201d\u00a0Now we\u2019re right back at pushing for six collections again.\u00a0But\u00a0at\u00a0least we feel we\u2019re more empowered now to write our own stories going forward.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

GG:\u00a0Did you find it difficult to get inspired during the pandemic?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

SERGIO: No, I think\u00a0for me it\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0stifle\u00a0my creativity.\u00a0It\u00a0actually evoked\u00a0it. I feel like when you\u2019re a creative person, solitude invokes creativity. At least for me\u00a0it does. And the crazy things I that I had on inspiration for the collection that kind of shifted after we did Michelle Obama [attending the 2021 inauguration]. We had a great\u00a0response,\u00a0so it was like,\u00a0OK,\u00a0this is what people want from me.\u00a0So\u00a0I had to kind of infuse a lot\u00a0more dressy\u00a0pieces into the collection than I originally had.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

GG:\u00a0Is that what you\u2019re feeling like? That women want to get dressed up\u00a0again?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

SERGIO: I feel like women are tired of wearing pajamas. Even if they\u2019re going to sit at home, they\u2019re going to get dressed because they\u2019re tired of looking sloppy. And I think women are craving some type of experience. I have friends\u00a0who\u00a0dress up exceptionally well to go to a basic\u00a0dinner.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

GG:\u00a0So\u00a0let\u2019s talk about NYFW. Why did you think showing in person was important to do right now? What about that experience can\u2019t translate to Instagram or\u00a0livestream?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

SERGIO: I think the live show experience is so different because… it\u2019s like the difference between going to church and watching church on TV. You can\u2019t feel the experience as well as you do when you\u2019re there and you\u2019re feeling\u00a0the energy\u00a0and\u00a0the excitement.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And I mean, I remember coming up\u00a0in\u00a0design school in the early\u00a02000s;\u00a0it\u00a0was like the golden\u00a0age\u00a0of fashion. There was so much money in fashion and the shows were over the top. You could tell when you watched them. Every model at every show was like a supermodel. It was an era of decadence and that was when I was studying in school.\u00a0So\u00a0when I watched shows, it inspired me like,\u00a0\u201cGod, I can\u2019t wait to do a show like that one day.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":30655,"featured_media":33848,"template":"","format":"standard","categories":[17,16],"yoast_head":"\nShowing Their Colors: Sergio Hudson -
