It\u2019s the decree of the IMG Alliance, an initiative banding together 11 American designers in a collective pledge to show at New York Fashion Week<\/a> for the next three seasons. \u201cWe\u2019re rebuilding the bedrock of New York Fashion Week,\u201d Noah Kozlowski,\u00a0director of\u00a0designer\u00a0relations for IMG,\u00a0tells\u00a0<\/span>Grazia\u00a0USA<\/span><\/i>. \u201cIn partnering with these designers through 2022, we\u2019re safely demonstrating the resilience and artistry of American fashion on a global stage.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In exchange for their commitment, each of the participating designers will receive funding from IMG to help finance their shows. \u201cThe designers who are showing here are, for the most part, independent and don\u2019t have the scale and level of support that some of their counterparts in Europe have,\u201d Kozlowski continued. \u201cSo, this initiative came about very organically, out of countless conversations we\u2019ve been having with designers over the past several months.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pre-pandemic,\u00a0there were countless\u00a0conversations\u00a0of a different nature:\u00a0regarding\u00a0the relevance and ROI of the shows,\u00a0the breakneck pace of the fashion calendar, the implications\u2014environmental and otherwise\u2014of a six-collections-per-year output, the sheer volume of\u00a0<\/span>stuff\u00a0<\/span><\/i>created in the name of newness. Then,\u00a0the\u00a0pandemic\u00a0hit\u00a0and an industry\u00a0often\u00a0pushed into\u00a0hyperspeed\u00a0was stopped dead in its tracks.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nearly two years\u00a0later,\u00a0we\u2019re picking up speed but\u00a0how it resumes\u00a0in earnest\u00a0remains to be seen.\u00a0For insight, we spoke with those who have their eyes on the horizon:\u00a0six designers taking part in fashion\u2019s great Reconstruction.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Grazia Gazette<\/em>:\u00a0How has this imposed break\u00a0affected your creative process over the last two years?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

JOSEPH:\u00a0I wanted to approach it as a break from how we used to do things and think very intentionally and purposefully about the production and the experience and the emotion we were trying to convey.\u00a0So\u00a0a lot of\u00a0the production elements are much more\u00a0thoughtful<\/span><\/b>\u2014<\/span>even for music,\u00a0where we\u2019re working with an original\u00a0composer as opposed to\u00a0kind of using existing music,\u00a0and\u00a0the invitation,\u00a0we worked with an artist to create\u00a0something meaningful.\u00a0So\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0taken more time and we started a lot earlier than we normally would.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

GG<\/span>:\u00a0Has\u00a0that slower, more intentional approach translated to your design process?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

JOSEPH:\u00a0Definitely. I think\u00a0the hard thing about being a designer is that you\u00a0need to be\u00a0creative, but\u00a0on a very strict timeline. There\u2019s not a lot of professions\u00a0with those parameters, where you\u00a0have to\u00a0be incredibly creative in very little\u00a0time,\u00a0and\u00a0have to\u00a0deliver by a certain date and then you\u2019re reviewed on\u00a0it\u00a0and you gauge the financial success of it and then start it all over again.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I think because we\u2019d never had a break,\u00a0we\u00a0never really\u00a0took\u00a0the time to look back or take a moment to pause and think about\u00a0the\u00a0trajectory and where\u00a0we\u00a0want\u00a0to go.\u00a0So\u00a0taking this time to\u00a0think about our goals has really affected the design process<\/span><\/b>\u2014<\/span>what I design and how I design and how I think about the collection. It\u2019s\u00a0definitely\u00a0had\u00a0an impact.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

GG<\/span>:\u00a0Much has been made about an anticipated revival of glamour and this idea that women want to dress up again.\u00a0That\u00a0may be\u00a0true,\u00a0but I think to say that women are dying to throw on gowns and sequins is an oversimplification. I think it\u2019s more\u00a0than\u00a0the fact that\u00a0we\u2019re all more intentional in our dress, simply because we do it less. We want to really convey something when we\u00a0<\/span>do\u00a0<\/span><\/i>see people because we see them far less than we used to. There\u2019s more meaning because there\u2019s less exposure.\u00a0Your thoughts?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

JOSEPH:\u00a0Totally.\u00a0We\u00a0have\u00a0less contact with people now,\u00a0so when\u00a0we\u00a0do,\u00a0we\u00a0really want to make an impression. You really want to make those sartorial decisions\u00a0or sartorial\u00a0moments count and be\u00a0really purposeful.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I also really think that there\u2019s going to be much more kind of fracturing as well. There are going to be people who probably will never go into an office again, and whose habits of\u00a0dress\u00a0are really going to change a lot.\u00a0What\u2019s\u00a0really happened during the pandemic is that\u00a0the\u00a0optionalities\u00a0have sort of multiplied. The ways of living your life and how you express it though dress have multiplied\u00a0exponentially. And as a designer, I don\u2019t\u00a0think\u00a0that I\u2019m ever going to be able to speak to everyone and everyone\u2019s way of dressing. I\u00a0think\u00a0successful designers\u00a0going forward\u00a0are really going to have to have a niche, specific\u00a0vision.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

G<\/span>G<\/span>:\u00a0You showed in Paris last season, and you\u00a0returned for fashion week in New York this fall.\u00a0Tell me a little bit about that\u00a0decision.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

JOSEPH:\u00a0I decided\u00a0pretty early\u00a0on during our time\u00a0in\u00a0the pandemic that I wanted to come back to New York. Partially, it was a personal decision. It\u2019s where I live. It\u2019s where my team is. I\u2019m very attached to New York.\u00a0Especially during this time,\u00a0everyone was so down on New York that I just felt like,\u00a0\u201cNo, actually New York is going to buck up and I want to be\u00a0a small\u00a0part\u00a0of\u00a0the reinvention of New York and New York\u00a0Fashion Week.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And then honestly, I\u2019d be lying if\u00a0I didn\u2019t say\u00a0there\u00a0was\u00a0also a practical\u00a0consideration, which is that we\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0know what the situation\u00a0would\u00a0be in Europe in September.\u00a0The idea of\u00a0schlepping\u00a0my whole team to\u00a0another country, whether that would\u00a0even\u00a0be\u00a0possible,\u00a0felt like a nightmare.\u00a0Just way too many variables.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

G<\/span>G<\/span>:\u00a0What do you make of New York now, in\u00a0its\u00a0current state?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

JOSEPH:\u00a0When I first moved to New York, I think what was so magical about\u00a0it\u00a0was this raw,<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>kind of unfiltered, unapologetic energy that\u00a0permeated\u00a0the city.\u00a0That\u2019s something that I really felt again over\u00a0the summer, this kind of banding together and this feeling that\u00a0there are\u00a0no rules.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":30655,"featured_media":33844,"template":"","format":"standard","categories":[17,16],"yoast_head":"\nShowing Their Colors: Joseph Altuzarra -
