With the oceans literally catching fire around us,\u00a0the time has come for serious action.\u00a0Project Zero<\/a> is here to help. The nonprofit\u2019s mission is straightforward: to create more worldwide ocean sanctuaries, preserving aquatic life against the climate crisis. By restoring the health of oceans and marine ecosystems, the organization aims to combat issues like pollution, drilling, and fishing that harm the world\u2019s waters\u201492.3\u00a0percent\u00a0of which are unprotected, according to the Marine Protection Atlas.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Michele Clarke\u2019s own love for the oceans drove her to found Project Zero just over a decade ago,\u00a0setting\u00a0out to raise awareness and generate funding to secure ocean sanctuaries worldwide.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, awareness that the ocean is in such dire straits is low, and ocean conservation gets a fraction of a fraction of global philanthropic funds that go towards the environment:\u00a03\u00a0percent\u00a0to the environment as a category, and the ocean gets 6\u00a0percent\u00a0of that,\u201d Clarke\u00a0said in an email conversation with\u00a0<\/span>Grazia Gazette: The Hamptons.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0\u201cGiven that the ocean comprises 70\u00a0percent\u00a0of Earth, that’s pretty scary.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To further Project Zero\u2019s mission, Clarke has tapped a unique group of ambassadors to represent the organization. These include model, DJ, and activist\u00a0Alexandra Richards, artist Cavier Coleman, actor Ronen Rubinstein, entrepreneur Mei Kwok, and musician Griff Washburn; all five share a passion for ocean life.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Alexandra Richards, who also serves as a board member for Project Zero, has championed the organization\u2019s cause for\u00a0more than\u00a0a decade. \u201cI saw a very concerning documentary back in 2009 called\u00a0<\/span>The Cove<\/span><\/i>, and I was trying to figure out a way I could help,\u201d she explained.\u00a0\u201cThe ocean is our planet\u2019s life support system. It gives us every second breath we take.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Richards believes that small\u00a0steps\u00a0are\u00a0the best way for people to\u00a0begin to\u00a0make a difference in promoting sustainability.\u00a0Personally, she first committed to\u00a0eliminating her use of plastic straws and\u00a0to\u00a0carrying a reusable tote bag. Now, she\u00a0lives a largely sustainable lifestyle. \u201cI’d also like to point out that no one is perfect,\u201d she notes.\u00a0\u201cWhat is important is that we are all doing something to reduce our individual impact on the ocean\u2014and our planet.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In particular, Richards\u00a0hopes to instill the values of sustainability in her newborn\u00a0daughter, Arlowe,\u00a0through initiatives like local sourcing and removing harmful chemicals at home\u2014and, of course, to continue promoting awareness through music. \u201cSustainability is something that we incorporate in our lives every day and we\u2019ll be teaching our daughter that too as she grows up,\u201d Richards\u00a0explains.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ronen Rubinstein shares similar sentiments. The\u00a0<\/span>9-1-1: Lone Star<\/span><\/i>\u00a0actor\u00a0consciously\u00a0reduces his carbon footprint\u00a0by\u00a0eating vegan, buying vintage clothing, living in a solar-powered house, and driving a hydrogen fuel cell car. Rubinstein\u2019s care for the oceans was his motivation for joining Project Zero\u00a0as an ambassador, exemplified through his beach cleanup efforts during the pandemic. \u201cBeaches were empty.\u00a0Waters\u00a0were\u00a0cleaner than ever. I have never seen more dolphins and seals in the Cali coast in my life,\u201d he\u00a0told\u00a0<\/span>Grazia Gazette: The Hamptons<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As Project Zero continues to push for greater ocean protection, the organization is continuing various initiatives\u00a0to that end. One such project is \u201cAdopt-a-Coordinate,\u201d where individuals can adopt 1-100 km stretches of sea throughout the Pacific, Atlantic, Arctic, and Indian Oceans,\u00a0in the meantime\u00a0sharing\u00a0their additions on social media to raise awareness and funds for the climate crisis. Standard investments\u00a0in any amount\u00a0can be made on the\u00a0project\u2019s website. However, there\u2019s also a fashionable component to the cause: The brand\u2019s created a range of graphic T-shirts to promote their efforts.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ambassador and artist Cavier Coleman is the latest creative to be tapped as\u00a0a\u00a0contributor, adding his signature facial print to the shirts\u2019 \u201cOurs\u00a0to Solve\u201d lettering. The pieces are printed on an on-demand basis in a renewable energy-powered factory, making them both sustainable\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span><\/i>stylish.\u00a0\u201cThe ocean gives us life. It\u2019s important to take care of the ecosystem that makes life possible,\u201d Coleman states in an email.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Coleman believes that investments in the ocean\u2014no matter how big or small\u2014make a major difference in aquatic health. \u201cThe ocean is our biggest ally in the fight against the climate crisis. Project Zero is working to secure a global network of ocean sanctuaries, and they all need investment to secure them for the good of the planet and the people living around them,\u201d he says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, ocean restoration is a public matter\u2014and, according to Clarke, people should care about it if they like to breathe, drink fresh water, and live on a habitable planet.\u00a0Even if someone can\u2019t invest financially,\u00a0for example,\u00a0they can still support ocean restoration and sustainability from home.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are so many super easy ways to help,\u201d Clarke shares. \u201cStart by reducing your carbon footprint by doing little things like turning off the tap when you brush your teeth, washing your clothes in cold water\u00a0(they get just as clean),\u00a0switching to a green energy provider, lowering your thermostat. All these little things add up, especially if we all did them.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
