\u201cSo, first I have to ask you what your liquor choice is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Olivia Culpo\u00a0had\u00a0turned the tables on me. I\u00a0was\u00a0meant to be asking\u00a0her<\/i>\u00a0questions\u2014about\u00a0her<\/i>\u00a0life,\u00a0her<\/i>\u00a0career,\u00a0her<\/i>\u00a0many,\u00a0many<\/i>\u00a0projects. Instead, she\u00a0was asking\u00a0me<\/i>\u00a0about my drinking habits:\u00a0\u201cTequila or vodka, which do you prefer?\u201d<\/p>\n

Culpo\u2014<\/span>it soon became clear\u2014was trying to get a sense of my taste profile so that she\u00a0could\u00a0recommend a flavor of Vide,\u00a0the brand of\u00a0low-calorie,\u00a0no-carb canned cocktails\u00a0for which she serves as creative director. I copped\u00a0to some embarrassingly d\u00e9class\u00e9 preferences, which I will not repeat here, but which made her laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need to try that!\u201d she giggled.\u00a0She\u00a0ultimately settled\u00a0on the mango\u00a0vodka soda Vide\u00a0for me. (For the record, Culpo\u00a0herself\u00a0is partial to the grapefruit\u00a0tequila soda.)<\/p>\n

Vide\u00a0is just one of\u00a0the projects in\u00a0Culpo\u2019s\u00a0diverse array of\u00a0business ventures.\u00a0The 29-year-old model, actor, influencer, entrepreneur,\u00a0and former Miss Universe has\u00a0so much\u00a0going\u00a0on,\u00a0it\u2019s kind of hard to keep track\u00a0of it all:\u00a0There\u2019s\u00a0Back40,\u00a0the\u00a0restaurant\u00a0she opened in 2017\u00a0with\u00a0her family\u00a0in\u00a0her\u00a0home state of Rhode Island.\u00a0(A second\u00a0location, Union & Main, is due to open before the end of the year.) There\u2019s More Than a Mask, a line of\u00a0cloth\u00a0masks\u00a0Culpo launched at the beginning of the pandemic.\u00a0In recent years, she\u2019s created\u00a0capsule collections\u00a0for brands like Macy\u2019s and Express, and partnered with the likes of L\u2019Or\u00e9al, DSW,\u00a0and Rampage as a brand ambassador.<\/p>\n

And, of course, there\u2019s the modeling. When we spoke in late July, Culpo was in Miami for the launch of\u00a0Sports\u00a0Illustrated<\/i>\u2019s\u00a0annual Swimsuit Issue. She\u2019d\u00a0been featured on the 2020 cover, but because of COVID restrictions, the magazine wasn\u2019t able to properly f\u00eate her and the two other models\u2014Jasmine\u00a0Sanders\u00a0and Kate Bock\u2014who appeared on the cover with her.\u00a0They were making up for it this year.\u00a0Culpo was\u00a0thrilled to be in town celebrating alongside this year\u2019s\u00a0cover\u00a0girls:\u00a0Megan\u00a0Thee\u00a0Stallion, Naomi Osaka,\u00a0and\u00a0Leyna\u00a0Bloom, the first transgender model to\u00a0appear on\u00a0the issue\u2019s cover.<\/p>\n

She\u00a0laughed as she talked about getting to explore Miami with her sister\u00a0Sophia, who managed to sneak her nine-week-old goldendoodle puppy into a party.\u00a0\u201cIt\u00a0kinda\u00a0feels like everybody\u2019s just been let out for recess,\u201d she said. \u201cSo, it\u2019s a fun time to be out and about, I guess. Better than before!\u201d\u00a0(Little did we know\u00a0that\u00a0within a week\u00a0the\u00a0Delta variant would\u00a0cut short\u00a0the\u00a0hot vax summer\u00a0we all needed so badly.)<\/p>\n

From Miami, Culpo was bound for the Amalfi Coast\u00a0and then to Greece,\u00a0where she would meet up again with Sophia and their other sister Aurora for a bit of a\u00a0girls\u2019\u00a0trip. Although, the trio has\u00a0been working on a super-secret project that Culpo wasn\u2019t quite ready to discuss, so\u00a0it\u2019s likely the vacay would end up incorporating some work. \u201cI mean, sometimes it\u2019s hard to differentiate if I\u2019m actually here for fun or here for work when I\u2019m traveling like this,\u201d Culpo admitted.<\/p>\n

Obviously, when you have the sort of public profile that Culpo does, your work can infiltrate most aspects of your life. As a social media influencer\u2014her Instagram account boasts nearly five million followers\u2014she is constantly documenting\u00a0every second of her busy life.\u00a0In the week or so following our\u00a0chat, I kept up with her antics in Santorini with Aurora and Sophia\u00a0on Instagram.\u00a0Through the scrolling,\u00a0something became clear:\u00a0While Culpo, of course, posts the kind of highly styled, aspirational images of herself that we all expect from figures like her, she\u2019s also not afraid to post candid goofy pics and the occasionally unflattering mishap.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do have fun,\u201d she told me. \u201cI would never want to take myself too\u00a0seriously, because\u00a0that would be depressing. So, there\u2019s not a huge barrier between the person that I am behind the camera and the person that I am in real life, and I like it like that. I feel like that comes very naturally to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Culpo\u2019s\u00a0success as an influencer certainly informed her latest role. (Did I mention she\u2019s also an actor?)\u00a0In writer-director Ty Hodges\u2019s indie drama\u00a0Venus as a Boy<\/i>, Culpo plays\u00a0Insta-famous New Yorker\u00a0Ruby, whose whirlwind love affair with struggling LA\u00a0artist Hunter (Hodges) is complicated by their disparate social scenes.<\/p>\n

Hodges told me that the process of casting Ruby took upward\u00a0of seven months. Ultimately, it was Culpo\u2019s acting chops as well as her authenticity that sealed the deal. \u201cI think a lot of times when you see films about a social media influencer, they feel kind of contrived, not as honest and not as human,\u201d Hodges explained.\u00a0\u201cI think what she brought to it was a very human existence. Yeah, she happens to be a social media influencer, but the film is not about that. It\u2019s about her as a human being.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for Culpo,\u00a0\u201cI definitely felt like playing a version of what I do in real life was very cathartic. And\u00a0challenging too in some respects,\u201d\u00a0she said.\u00a0She described a scene in which Hodges\u2019s character tells Ruby she\u2019s vapid and vain. \u201cYou know, it\u2019s all of those comments that you see on the Internet that you don\u2019t really ever want to have to. So,\u00a0having to dig deep there and really think about how it makes me feel to hear that\u2014which I do, absolutely, on the internet\u2014is challenging, but also was\u00a0really cathartic, because I could yell at him and do exactly what I would want to do in real life if I could!\u201d<\/p>\n

But why focus on the trolls? Culpo would rather devote her energy to the causes that mean something to her. \u201cI think people in any form of spotlight\u2014whether you\u2019re an influencer, actor, model, singer\u2014there is a responsibility to use your platform in a way that\u2019s going to help,\u201d she explained. To that end, she donated the profits from her initial More Than a Mask collection to Feeding America, helping to provide 1.5 million meals to kids in need. During last summer\u2019s nationwide protests following the killings of George Floyd, Brianna Taylor, and countless other Black Americans at the hands of the police, Culpo donated More Than a Mask\u2019s profits to the racial justice advocacy organization Color of Change. More recently, she\u2019s released a line of jumpsuits benefitting Period, a nonprofit that provides menstrual supplies to people in need. She\u2019s been open about her own struggle with endometriosis and is committed to destigmatizing menstrual health.<\/p>\n

Culpo credits her parents\u00a0for her impulse to give back. \u201cThey always showed the importance of giving back, being grateful, not expecting a lot in return,\u201d she recalled. \u201cIt really just boils down\u00a0to that. I\u00a0have the ability to\u00a0help because I\u2019ve been given such a big platform.\u00a0<\/i>If there\u2019s something I think I can really make an impact on, I\u2019m\u00a0gonna\u00a0go for it.\u201d\u00a0In short, stay tuned for much more to come.<\/p>\n
