Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki<\/a> has been cast as The Princess of Wales<\/a> in seasons five and six of The Crown<\/em> \u2013 and we couldn\u2019t think of a better fit.<\/p>\n

I genuinely mean that. To meet Debicki in person is like meeting a Royal. All of six-foot-one, the 29-year-old is a vision in real life; warm, funny and speaks with the type of eloquence only a NIDA student could \u2013 or Cate Blanchett, an actress this actress is continually likened to.<\/p>\n

\u201cPrincess Diana\u2019s spirit, her words and her actions live in the hearts of so many,\u201d Debicki said upon the announcement of her new role. \u201cIt is my true privilege and honor to be joining this masterful series, which has had me absolutely hooked from episode one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Debicki will join a new cast for the series that includes Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth (The Downton Abbey<\/em> actress succeeds Olivia Coleman and Claire Foy in the role), Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret and Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip.<\/p>\n

Emma Corrin<\/a> is playing Diana on the show’s upcoming fourth season, but Debicki will take on the part for what\u2019s sure to be the character\u2019s most dramatic chapters.<\/p>\n

Her appointment has been better received than news Kristen Stewart will also play Princess Diana in a new film directed by Pablo Larrain.<\/a> This particular drama \u2013 expected to be a highlight on the Cannes Film Festival\u2019s virtual line-up \u2013 will explore a critical weekend in the life of Diana, the one where she decided to end her marriage to the Prince Of Wales, Charles.<\/p>\n

In the past, movies about Diana\u2019s life have not done well. Take a look back at the actresses who have played the Royal to unfavorable reviews.<\/a><\/p>\n

Debicki is notoriously private. She doesn\u2019t have Instagram and upon sitting down her in a hotel room in Los Angeles in 2019, I asked her about her first trip to Los Angeles; what she saw, what she thought. \u201cI woke up in a hotel on Sunset and was 20 years old, had never been to America and I had landed at night,\u201d Debicki explained. \u201cI remember I opened my windows and there were just billboards. I thought, \u2018What is this strange Lego Land?\u2019. It was so weird. Imagine if you opened your windows in Sydney and there were billboards everywhere. You\u2019d probably think \u2018What happened?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Since this time, you would have spotted Debicki in The Great Gatsby<\/em>, The Burnt Orange Heresy<\/em>, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2<\/em> and Steve McQueen\u2019s Widows<\/em> \u2013 the latter part deemed her breakout role. You will also see her star in Christopher Nolan\u2019s Tenet <\/em>with Robert Pattinson and John David Washington, out this month.<\/p>\n

Debicki says she\u2019s \u2013 so far \u2013 never had an \u201cI made it\u201d moment. \u201cI\u2019m waiting for the penny drop, I hope it never comes actually. That would be dangerous wouldn\u2019t it, if you started to believe it in a funny way,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the penny will drop soon given the popularity of The Crown<\/em>. No doubt the size of the billboards will be sky-high.<\/p>\n
