Dan Pearce is trying to explain what it is about his work that has seen him become one of the UK\u2019s most in-demand contemporary artists.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cArt has a connection to people,\u00a0it makes them feel an emotion,\u201d he\u00a0says. \u201cI only have one objective\u00a0as an artist:\u00a0to try and engage the audience for a reaction, good or bad.\u201d He pauses. \u201cBut for me it\u2019s also fun.\u00a0I love what I do, you can never take it too seriously, it\u2019s not life or death. At the end of the day, it\u2019s just fun.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s that sense of fun, of\u00a0provoking\u00a0a reaction,\u00a0of boundary-pushing exuberance, that\u00a0sees\u00a0Pearce count<\/span>\u00a0many household names among his clientele, including<\/span> British acting and music heavyweights Idris Elba, Boy George, Rag N Bone Man and Lewis Capaldi, as well as boxing champ Antony Joshua.<\/span><\/p>\n

And the word is spreading across the Atlantic. Rapper 50 Cent was a recent commission, and Pearce\u2019s portrait of Sharon Osbourne \u2013 a riot of spray paint, ink, gold leaf and Swarovski crystals out of which\u00a0Mrs\u00a0O emerges in profile, wearing a crown and looking uncannily similar to the British Queen \u2013 became a viral sensation\u00a0earlier this summer, racking up over 330,000 views on Osbourne\u2019s Instagram page.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cSharon\u00a0did\u00a0an amazing thank you post with Ozzy and it\u00a0was\u00a0commented on by a lot of her celebrity friends,\u201d he says, \u201cso I suppose once one celeb shows off my commission then others then want one and get in contact.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOne\u202fI\u202fam\u202freally looking\u202fforward to is an upcoming commission of\u202f<\/span>Will.i.Am<\/span><\/a>.\u202fI\u2019m\u202fa huge fan of his, not just for his music but for his charity work and his love for innovation of creative technology.\u202fTechnology is infused into the world of\u202fWill.i.Am\u00a0as an essential element. It powers everything he does,\u00a0so my\u00a0commission\u00a0will\u00a0have to be something special that encompasses technology as well as himself.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pearce\u2019s infectious passion for his work not only shines through in his creations, but\u00a0also\u00a0in the way he talks about them\u00a0\u2013 if his paintings fizz with energy and enthusiasm,\u00a0then\u00a0so do his words. \u201c<\/span>For me being an artist, you never switch off,\u201d he says.\u00a0\u201cI live, breathe and dream art!\u00a0Sometimes that can be taxing as your\u00a0brain can only consume so much creativity\u00a0at once.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It may come as a surprise to hear then, that he came to art relatively late in life.\u00a0Born in Australia but raised in Britain, Pearce\u00a0has only\u00a0been\u00a0a full-time artist for a decade, with his first exhibition just eight years ago, after a career that has variously included studying for a degree in jewelry and a stint in the digital industry.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He insists, however, that the urge to create was always there\u00a0\u2013 and that all these\u00a0disparate\u00a0aspects of his professional\u00a0career\u00a0have helped shape the kind of artist he has become. Life, like art itself, is greater than the sum of its parts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I was always sketching as a kid and it\u2019s what I enjoyed most at school,\u201d he says<\/span>.\u00a0\u201c<\/span>I ended up in\u00a0Uni doing a jewelry degree which was a bit random but something I\u00a0really enjoyed,\u00a0and\u00a0I spent\u00a0four\u00a0years working with precious metals and stones which has had a huge influence on how I approach my art today.\u00a0After that\u00a0I lived in Australia for several years and ended up moving into the digital industry focusing on web and graphic design.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I didn<\/span>\u2019<\/span>t\u00a0return\u00a0to art until I was\u00a0in my\u00a0mid-thirties and became a full<\/span>–<\/span>time mixed media artist\u00a0in my\u00a0late thirties<\/span>\u00a0\u2013<\/span>\u00a0which is a rather strange career path<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0but one I love to do every day, I don\u2019t see it as a job.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I\u00a0came to the art game late,\u00a0I had a whole tool box of skills that artists\u00a0don\u2019t usually get straight out of Uni. I had worked in a few industries and had experience of marketing, branding, web design\/development, managing teams, presenting\u2026\u00a0all these experiences help me fast track the promotion of my art and myself.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Celebrity commissions and endorsements\u00a0aside, Pearce\u2019s latest project has a far more personal and\u00a0powerful\u00a0theme. Hope, a collaboration with Prodigy\u00a0frontman\u00a0Maxim, is a multimedia installation featuring a sculpture of a young boy wearing a gas mask and preparing to pull the pin on a clear, resin grenade containing a heart, which represents the COVID-19 vaccine. The pair made 50 sculptures in total, and they are accompanied by a film \u2013 starring Pearce\u2019s 11-year-old son \u2013\u00a0and\u00a0an exclusive four-track EP release of new music by Maxim.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As well as highlighting hope for a way out of the pandemic, the film illustrates the impact the crisis has had on mental health, homelessness and child welfare. The artists have also donated sculptures to the British National Health Service\u00a0charity\u00a0Together, young people\u2019s mental health charity\u00a0YoungMinds\u00a0and homeless charity Shelter, in order to raise funds for those hidden victims of the last 18 months.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>Pearce is justifiably proud of the impact Hope has had \u2013 and of the ability for art to make a tangible difference to people\u2019s lives.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>The\u00a0positive feedback has been truly amazing,\u201d he says.\u00a0\u201cIt touched a lot of people. Folks can relate to the narrative. I am so proud of what we achieved, so\u00a0so\u00a0proud of my son playing the boy in the film\u00a0and\u00a0it\u00a0was really good to be able to donate three sculptures to three charities that we highlighted.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a belief, and a mission, that he is taking into his next project.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cI am\u00a0already\u00a0working on another sculpture, a\u00a0<\/span>full size\u00a0AK47 with a red heart shaped muzzle,\u00a0angel wing ammo magazine and engraved John Lennon lyrics on the butt stock. Each one is hand painted. I am planning on working with War\u00a0Child and donating\u00a0some of the sculptures\u00a0to help\u00a0raise awareness for their\u00a0amazing charity\u00a0work.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>And in the meantime, a well-deserved summer off? No chance.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
