The\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/rita-moreno-defends-hamilton-in-the-heights-lin-manuel-miranda\/\">In The Heights<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>star, who is of Afro-Latina ancestry, has officially been selected for the titular role in HBO Max&#8217;s <em>Batgirl<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>First reported by\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2021\/07\/batgirl-leslie-grace-lands-role-in-warner-bros-dc-film-1234797608\/\" target=\"_blank\">Deadline,<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>the industry newcomer is headed straight into DC&#8217;s juggernaut franchise, fresh off her breakout role in Lin-Manuel Miranda&#8217;s hotly-contested musical film. Although the details of the plot have not yet been disclosed, Grace will portray Barbara Gordon (aka Batgirl), the daughter of Gotham police commissioner Jim Gordon. In her breakout role in\u00a0<em>In The Heights<\/em>, she played Nina Rosario, a first-generation college students grappling with pressures of feeling ostracized at Stanford University and being hailed as one of the grateful few to &#8220;make it out.&#8221; Although the film itself was <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/in-the-heights-latinx-diversity\/\">criticized for its glaring erasure of darker-skinned principal actors<\/a>, Grace&#8217;s representation as an Afro-Latinx woman was an integral the picture&#8217;s display of the Latinx diaspora.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2021\/07\/batgirl-haley-lu-richardson-isabella-merced-zoey-deutch-leslie-grace-actresses-testing-barbra-gordon-role-1234794632\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Deadline <\/em><\/a>reported that executives were testing a group of actresses for the highly-coveted role, including Grace, Isabela Merced, Zoey Deutch and Haley Lu Richardson.
