Is 2021 the year of Megan Fox\u2019s comeback<\/a>? It feels as though the <\/span>Jennifer\u2019s Body<\/span><\/i> actress has been everywhere recently: on magazine covers, at red carpet events and making headlines for her bold style choices<\/a> and public relationship with musician Machine Gun Kelly<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, it\u2019s not just her newfound romance that\u2019s resulted in Fox, once again, taking centre stage. It\u2019s to do with the public\u2019s reckoning with how celebrity women were treated in the spotlight in the \u201890s and early aughts, as paparazzi and tabloid culture skyrocketed. There\u2019s the #FreeBritney movement<\/a>, which began after fans started questioning Spears\u2019 12-year conservatorship online and has since resulted in a legal battle between the pop star and her family, and Paris Hilton\u2019s tell-all documentary<\/a>, in which she detailed the abuse she suffered as a child at boarding school.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Post-#MeToo, when we view films we\u2019re aware of the way they\u2019re so often portrayed through the male gaze. But when Fox burst onto our screens as a brunette bombshell mechanic in<\/span> Transformers <\/span><\/i>a decade earlier, <\/span>in 2007<\/span>,<\/span><\/i> the conversation still had a long way to go. In fact, even her 2012 role in <\/span>This is 40 <\/span><\/i>was publicly questioned by Emily Ratajkowski<\/a> earlier this year, who said the movie \u201cis not ageing well,\u201d due to the way Fox\u2019s character was ogled at in the film.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, in a new interview, Fox says that during her early career she hated fame and battled \u201cpsychological demons,\u201d explaining she was often forced to dress in a way that was \u201cless sexy\u201d so that she would be taken \u201cmore seriously\u201d in the industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a <\/span>video<\/span><\/a> for <\/span>WhoWhatWear,<\/span><\/i> Fox spoke about the controlling nature of the industry, revealing that when she was starting out \u201ceveryone wanted [her] to look a certain way,\u201d adding that the expectations placed on women in the film industry can mean there comes a pressure from stylists to dress in a way that is \u201cmore conservative.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone wanted me to look like a movie star so that I could land this role,\u201d she said while looking at a photo taken shortly before she was cast in the cult classic <\/span>Jennifer\u2019s Body<\/span><\/i>. \u201cI had a real problem with authority when I was young,\u201d she explained. \u201cI resent people trying to tell me how to look, or act, or speak.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m much better about it now,\u201d she said \u201cBut at this point, if you tried to push me in a certain direction, I would go the opposite way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Fox spoke about how helpful her current stylist, Maeve Reilly (who also counts Hailey Bieber as a client), has been in helping her find a style that she feels comfortable and sexy in, saying Reilly takes a different approach to her stylists of the past who had tried to \u201chide\u201d her.<\/span><\/p>\n
