\u201cIt\u2019s living and breathing,\u201d he says. \u201cMillions of lives dizzyingly moving around us as we go about our daily routines\u2026 But in a city like this, it\u2019s all too easy to miss it if you don\u2019t stop and look around once in a while.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For nearly two decades, the Britis<\/span>h-born photographer has been doing just that, stalking the streets of the city with his Leica camera, capturing celebrities including Michael Jackson and Britney Spears, as well as New York\u2019s ordinary people. And it\u2019s the unrelenting energy, constant change, and sheer unpredictability of the Big Apple that makes his pictures so extraordinary.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now his unique vision can be seen in a new book and show, <\/span>Street<\/a><\/em>, capturing the people and cityscapes of New York in moments of serendipitous beauty and sudden clarity. As influential art and design outlet\u00a0<\/span>My Modern Met<\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0describes it: \u201cFrom astronauts on the crosswalk to young skaters shredding on high rooftops, to 30-foot-tall statues lying sideways on the back of a truck, Penman\u2019s subjects prove there\u2019s never a dull moment in the Big Apple.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

If the photographs themselves are stunning \u2013 by turn surprising, moving, funny, and even shocking \u2013 the show’s real star is New York itself. Penman\u2019s love of his adoptive home shines through on every page.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey say, \u2018Life moves pretty fast,\u2019 he says. \u201cI\u2019ve found this to be true in the 18 years I\u2019ve trawled the streets of New York City as a photographer. If I was to say what I hope to achieve with my street photography, it would be to keep documenting the ever-changing streets of New York City in all its rat-infested, garbage-mounted glory.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
