Las Vegas Raiders defensive lineman Carl Nassib has come out as gay, making him the first currently active N.F.L.<\/a> player to do so. \u201cI just want to take a quick moment to say that I\u2019m gay,\u201d Nassib said in a self-shot video posted to his Instagram account<\/a> on Monday afternoon. He also pledged to donate $100,000 to The Trevor Project<\/a>, a nonprofit that provides suicide prevention services for LGBTQ+ youth.<\/p>\n

In an accompanying written statement, the 28-year-old admitted that he had struggled with the decision to come out for the past 15 years. \u201cI feel especially thankful to have had so much support when many who came before \u2014 and many even now \u2014 do not. I stand on the shoulders of giants, incredible people who paved the way for me to have this opportunity,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n
