Madea<\/a> isn\u2019t gone just yet. Tyler Perry<\/a> is planning a 12th installment of his popular film franchise, reprising his role as ‘Madea.’ <\/span>A Madea Homecoming<\/a><\/span><\/em>\u00a0is set to release in 2022 debuting on popular streaming service, Netflix. The feature will be shot at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. In 2019, Perry talked about retiring Madea \u2014 a character modeled after his late mother and aunt \u2014 as he premiered\u00a0<\/span>A Madea Family Funeral<\/span><\/em>. \u201cI don\u2019t want to be her age playing her, so it was time to shut it down and move on. I\u2019ve got some other things I want to do, and in this next 50, I\u2019m going to do something different. This character has been amazing. So many people have loved her. It\u2019s been a great franchise,\u201d the 51-year-old says.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Madea Homecoming<\/em> also expands Netflix\u2019s relationship with Perry, whose 2020 film\u00a0<\/span>A Fall From Grace<\/span><\/em>\u00a0was seen by 39 million households in its first month on the streaming service. Perry is also shooting\u00a0<\/span>A Jazzman\u2019s Blues<\/span><\/em>\u00a0for Netflix, which stars Joshua Boone, Solea Pfeiffer, Amirah Vann and Austin Scott. Perry\u2019s films, including 11 movies and another 20 plays in the Madea franchise, have grossed over $1 billion at the North American box office. Tyler Perry\u2019s infamous character, Madea, made her first appearance in the 1999 play\u00a0<\/span>I Can Do Bad All by Myself<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Originally, the 11th installment in the Madea series was supposed to be the final film. In 2019 Perry even told CNN: \u201cShe\u2019s also run out of things to say in my point of view. So if there\u2019s something else for her to say, maybe one day she\u2019ll return but for right now, no, I think I\u2019m done.\u201d And it looks like he decided there was more to be done. Perry will write and direct <\/span>A Madea Homecoming<\/span><\/em>. He is also joined by the Tyler Perry Studios President of Production & Development, Michelle Sneed, who will serve as the executive producer of the movie alongside Perry.
