Henson<\/a> is trading in Cookie Lyon\u2019s ostentatious furs for faded marabou. Today, NBC announced that the <em>Empire<\/em> star will play <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/grazia-by-onehope-rose-summer-launch\/\">boozy<\/a> orphanage matron Miss Hannigan in its holiday broadcast of <em>Annie Live!<\/em> We can already see her tottering around in kitten heels, sloshing a martini while slurring her way through \u201cLittle Girls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWatching her take on this iconic role will be a thrill that has all the makings of must-watch television,\u201d NBCUniversal Television and Streaming\u2019s Chairman of Entertainment Content Susan Rovner said in a statement. And we couldn\u2019t agree more.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1977 musical, the famously nasty Miss Hannigan runs the dilapidated orphanage where Annie and her orphan pals initially spend their hard knock lives. Over the years, the role has been played in various stage revivals by the likes of Kathie Lee Gifford, Jane Lynch and Miranda Hart. <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/cameron-diaz-the-mask-bank-scene-red-dress\/\">Cameron Diaz<\/a> played a version of the character in the 2014 film version, which set the musical in the present day. But the version of Miss Hannigan that is probably best remembered is Carol Burnett\u2019s from the Oscar-nominated 1982 film adaptation.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Annie (1982) - Little Girls\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cDkEXszYtdo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol Burnett, who brought Miss Hannigan to life in the classic 1982 movie, is someone I have studied and idolized as far back as I can remember,\u201d Henson said in a statement. \u201cSo when the opportunity came to me to join NBC and this incredible group of producers, I jumped! Carol, I hope to do you proud!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along with Henson\u2019s casting, NBC also announce the start of a nationwide search for an undiscovered talent to play Annie herself. Auditions will be held <a href=\"https:\/\/castittalent.com\/Annie_Live\" target=\"_blank\">virtually<\/a> and will be open to young actors of any ethnicity.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, broadcast networks have invested big in live musical specials, with NBC airing productions of <em>The Sound of Music<\/em>, <em>The Wiz<\/em> and <em>Hairspray<\/em> in a bid to lure viewers away from streaming services.<em> Annie <\/em>will air live on December 2, and will be NBC\u2019s first live musical event since 2019\u2019s <em>Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":29097,"featured_media":25921,"template":"","format":"standard","categories":[23,38,16],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v18.5 (Yoast SEO v20.4) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Taraji P.
