At the opening of awards season, Michaela Coel<\/a>‘s I May Destroy You\u00a0<\/em>was spectacularly snubbed from the Golden Globes nominations list. Often referred to as “a sexual consent drama”, it was hailed by critics but was failed to be recognized until now. At the 2021 Television BAFTA Awards overnight, the show was awarded Best Mini-Series.<\/p>\n

In her acceptance speech, Coel dedicated the award to the intimacy director of the show, Ita O’Brien.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you for your existence in our industry, for making the space safe, for creating physical, emotional and professional boundaries so that we can make work about exploitation, loss of respect, about abuse of power without being exploited or abused in the process,” Coel said.<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cI know what it is like to shoot without an intimacy director. The messy, embarrassing feeling for the crew. The internal devastation for the actor. Your direction was essential to my show and I believe essential for every production company that wants to make work exploring themes of consent.\u201d<\/p>\n

I May Destroy You\u00a0<\/em>was spearheaded by BBC and HBO and follows Coel’s own experience with sexual assault by strangers after her drink was spiked. It details the aftermath of the rape.<\/p>\n

Coel appeared on the red carpet earlier in the evening wearing a black Maxmilian gown which featured a keyhole front and open back with red-capped sleeves.\u00a0 It was a stunning addition to her night of recognition.<\/p>\n
