Last week, when <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/lady-gaga-house-of-gucci-wedding-gown-photos\/\">Lady Gaga<\/a> announced her upcoming tenth anniversary edition of her sophomore album <em>Born This Way<\/em>, complete with a batch of newly recorded covers by queer artists and allies, I predicted that the new version of the title track would come from none other than dreamy masked singer <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/michael-kors-nyfw-fall-2020\/\">Orville Peck<\/a>. And today, I\u2019ve been proved right! Following Big Freedia\u2019s take on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/big-freedia-judas-lady-gaga\/\">Judas<\/a>,\u201d the queer country crooner\u2019s cover dropped today.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Orville Peck \u2013 Born This Way (The Country Road Version) [Official Audio]\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OCN0uYl_H_4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I mean, look, this wasn\u2019t exactly prophetic foresight. The special edition\u2019s list of \u201creimagined\u201d tracks included the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jmR5Aat11P8\" target=\"_blank\">Country Road Version<\/a>\u201d of the song, and I just did the math. But, come on. Let me have this!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so honoured and excited to be a part of the iconic legacy of this song and album,\u201d Peck posted on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/orvillepeck\/status\/1400857344326524935\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of that legacy, he\u2019s also done a bit of work towards cleaning it up. Notably, Peck\u2019s reimagined version of \u201cBorn This Way\u201d corrects the song\u2019s infamously insensitive lyrics. In her 2011 recording, as well as the \u201cCountry Road Version,\u201d the Grammy-winning pop star sang, \u201cNo matter Black, white or beige \/ Chola or orient made \/ I&#8217;m on the right track baby \/ I was born to be brave.\u201d Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/cifamerica\/2011\/feb\/14\/lady-gaga-monster-born-this-way\" target=\"_blank\">critics<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dunx.tumblr.com\/post\/3283017579\/the-racism-in-born-this-way-and-why-it-matters\" target=\"_blank\">fans<\/a> took issue with her use of the stereotypical and dehumanizing terms \u201cChola\u201d and \u201corient,\u201d presumably to refer to Latinx and Asian Americans. Those lyrics somewhat undercut the song\u2019s message of acceptance. (Oh, and here\u2019s another fun thing: Gaga literally called the idea that she cribbed \u201cBorn This Way\u201d from Madonna\u2019s \u201cExpress Yourself\u201d \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/entertainment\/music-arts\/lady-gaga-madonna-plagiarism-accusations-ripped-express-retarded-article-1.113468\" target=\"_blank\">retarded<\/a>\u201d in a 2011 issue of <em>NME<\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p>For his version, Peck seems to have managed to reimagine a world in which white musicians don\u2019t blithely throw around culturally insensitive terms without considering how they might be received. What a difference 10 years makes! In the new cover, Peck replaces the offensive language with: \u201cNo matter Black, white or beige \/ Asian or Latinx made\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the lyrics \u2014 some might call them cringe-inducingly sincere, others <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yOSMe7_Bvk0\" target=\"_blank\">reductive <\/a>\u2014 remain unchanged. All payments of $10 can be made in my name to&#8230;the Born This Way Foundation, I
