The highly anticipated album drove into our hearts early this morning and our timelines have ceased to recover. The <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">High School Musical: The Musical: The Series\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">star made waves in early January with her trailer single \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZmDBbnmKpqQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drivers license<\/a>\u201d claiming the No. 1 spot on the <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/taylor-swift-fearless-album-rerecording\/\">Billboard Hot 100 charts<\/a> for eight weeks. Now her heart-wrenching record\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sour<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is combining every part of your first love and subsequent first heartbreak. If <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/taylor-swift-joe-alwyn-conversations-with-friends\/\">Taylor Swift<\/a>, Hayley Williams, and a dash of Sara Bareilles procreated, it\u2019d be Rodrigo. Hence, Rodrigo being a resident <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Swiftie\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it was only right for her to interpolate Taylor Swift\u2019s \u201cNew Year&#8217;s Day\u201d in \u201c1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">All 11 tracks in the 18-year-old\u2019s album powerfully illustrate all the stages of mourning a relationship. From navigating what\u2019s supposed to be your \u201cgolden years\u201d (\u201cbrutal\u201d) to feeling like you\u2019re second best (\u201cenough for you\u201d) Rodrigo manages to address all of our unresolved anguish. In what feels like a dedicated album to the heartbroken and recovering,\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sour<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is exactly what every 17-year-old girl wants post-breakup: emotional liberation. As a songwriter, Rodrigo eloquently lays out the drastic highs and lows of healing.\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">You used me as an alibi,\u00a0<\/span><\/em><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I crossed my heart as you crossed the line<\/span><\/em><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u2026.Well, I hope I was your favorite crime.<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> In this absolute no-stops album there\u2019s room for the sad, bitter, and broken \u2014 and maybe healed if you\u2019re lucky.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">From the moment she entered her \u201cdrivers license\u201d era, Rodrigo gave space for those rendered silent. She gives room to the girls, like myself, who\u2019ve for far too long been understanding when they should be starting fires and effervescently giving out middle fingers. Among the many emotional ballads are the pop-punk-influenced songs like \u201cbrutal\u201d and \u201cjealousy, jealousy\u201d that continue to make Rodrigo a standout from the many other Gen Z pop princesses. Lyrically she holds her own while perfectly encapsulating teenage heartache \u2014 no matter if it happened yesterday or five years ago. She\u2019s also just so relatable, <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I too don\u2019t know how to parallel park, Olivia.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Just like everyone else on your timeline, we\u2019re experiencing the recollection of thoughts our high school selves might\u2019ve had, moreover, the words we left unsaid. <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">My therapist told me to write a letter to that one guy I *never dated* but broke my heart nonetheless and for a second while listening it felt like my words in my journal were being read aloud by Miss Olivia herself. The album follows a breakup, but somehow still feels personal to those unrequited teenage loves too, the ones that only happened in <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">your<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0heart and not theirs. Although still so young, Rodrigo creates an album with a nostalgic feel that re-immerses us in our younger, insecure and restless selves. But it also reminds us that there will be someone who finds us\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">more exciting<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Not only is she gracing covers and performing on late-night shows, but Rodrigo is also experiencing the many woes of teenage life in front of the entire world. I think that\u2019s why this album is such a beautiful exchange because we all get it &#8211; that moment your heart breaks into pieces, and you try to rebuild your way back to the girl you were before, only to realize she doesn\u2019t exist anymore. The album guides you through many interpretations led by your personal experiences, but we\u2019re all met with the same universal understanding of pain. With this being Rodrigo\u2019s debut record, <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sour\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is a poignant start to what seems to be a bright future.
