Are you ready to explore the real <\/em>MCU? The Michaela Coel<\/a> Universe, that is. At a virtual event earlier this week, the BBC previewed<\/a> its upcoming slate of dramas, and also teased something new from the creator of Chewing Gum<\/em> and I May Destroy You<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s truly in Michaela\u2019s head and it\u2019s not for me to second guess that too much at this point,\u201d BBC drama controller Piers Wenger told<\/a> Deadline<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s at relatively early stages, but I wanted to let the fans of I May Destroy You<\/em> know that there is a new show coming along.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 2020 series, which aired on HBO in the US, was based on Coel\u2019s own experience of being drugged and raped while writing Chewing Gum<\/em>. It was rapturously received on both sides of the Atlantic, and despite a mind-boggling shut-out<\/a> at the Golden Globes<\/a>, has been showered with awards<\/a> and nominations elsewhere. And, honestly, if you haven\u2019t seen it yet, stop reading now and just watch it.<\/p>\n

Still, Coel and HBO have downplayed<\/a> the possibility of a second season. But that doesn\u2019t necessarily mean Coel is done with the world she created in the series. According to Wenger, the show she\u2019s currently developing may share some connective tissue with I May Destroy You<\/em>. \u201cWhat relationship that show will have with the original series, [is for Michaela to decide],\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s a relationship between Chewing Gum<\/em> and I May Destroy You<\/em>. There\u2019s a through line to her thinking. I suspect there may be elements [of I May Destroy You<\/em>] but it\u2019s really too early to say anything specific.\u201d<\/p>\n

While it would be amazing to see a whole series devoted to characters like Terry (Weruche Opia) and Kwame (Paapa Essiedu), whatever Coel gives us next<\/a> is sure to be another revelatory experience \u2014 no matter what universe it\u2019s set in! As she told <\/a>Variety <\/em>recently, \u201cI think that this is the tip of the iceberg in terms of using fiction to really bring audiences to quite personal, challenging and dark places and asking
