And unsurprisingly, there\u2019s something even more insidious just beneath the surface of these conflicts, as <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/amber-ruffin-voter-suppression\/\">Amber Ruffin<\/a> explained on this week\u2019s episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/amber-ruffin-right-wing-terrorists\/\"><em>The Amber Ruffin Show<\/em><\/a>. In her latest \u201cHow Did We Get Here\u201d segment, the late-night host connected the dots between the Culture Wars and white supremacy.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How Culture Wars and White Supremacy Go Together Like \u201cGreen Eggs and Ham\u201d | The Amber Ruffin Show\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TmZhxGRH3ew?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Ruffin, aka. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M43uYGu7T5c\" target=\"_blank\">the first Black person to download a Coldplay album<\/a>, started off by briskly defining the term \u201cCulture Wars\u201d as a conflict between groups struggling for dominance of their values, beliefs, and practices. You want examples? Ruffin\u2019s got \u2019em! Like how Republicans yell about immigrants stealing your jobs instead of coming up with decent immigration policy; or when they yell about Joe Biden canceling hamburgers instead of finding a bipartisan approach to combating climate change; or when Rand Paul badgered Assistant Secretary of Health Rachel Levin with nonsense about genital mutilation during her confirmation hearing.<\/p>\n<p>And the term isn\u2019t mere hyperbole. \u201cThe ideas that conservatives sling around in the culture wars are dangerous, and they cost people\u2019s lives,\u201d Ruffin insisted, pointing out that violence against Asian-Americans and transgender people rose sharply after former president Donald Trump made comments or took actions that demonized those groups.<\/p>\n<p>Culture Wars, as Ruffin pointed out, are meant to scare people away from wanting change. The tactic goes all the way back to the early 20th Century \u2014 and, let\u2019s be real, definitely way earlier than that \u2014 when politicians blocked antilynching laws by invoking the specter of Black men raping white women constantly, which, in case you really need it spelled out, <em>was not happening<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Tactics like this, Ruffin explained, have contributed to the overwhelming whiteness and cis-ness of the U.S. government. \u201cThe purpose of a culture war is to make sure people are afraid of change,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd resisting change means maintaining
