The year may have been 2021 and the setting may have been a Proven\u00e7al quarry in the south of France, but the beauty looks at Chanel’s punk-inspired Cruise 2022 presentation<\/a> seamlessly teleported virtual spectators to another time. Models navigated the chalky milieu of the Carri\u00e8res de Lumi\u00e8res in Les Baux-de-Provence in makeup that evoked Joan Jett idolatry \u2013 dark kohl artfully flicked out at the corner of an eye \u2013 with Stella Tennant<\/a>-esque loose locks falling untethered over the other.<\/p>\n

If the side part debate<\/a> hadn’t already been settled, hairstylist Damien Boissinot certainly would have silenced Gen Z detractors. When models weren’t rocking pseudo-mullets or choppy bangs, they were primly secured with a Chanel barrette in a deep, sweeping temporary side fringe, or left entirely unencumbered in nonchalant waves.<\/p>\n

The makeup, as directed by Lucia Pica, conjured nostalgic 80s flashbacks via high voltage Joues Contraste Powder Blush in Rouge Profound<\/a>\u00a0along the cheekbones and temples. Brows were subtly filled in, while eyes were framed with a graphic black dual-winged lids, courtesy of the house’s Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long Lasting Eyeliner in Noir Intense<\/a> and a dusting of Les 4 Ombres Multi-Effect Quadra Eyeshadow in Candeur Et Provocation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In contrast, complexion and lips were kept soft and fresh. Chanel’s Les Beiges <\/a>Healthy Glow Foundation Hydration and Longwear Foundation was deposited sparingly across the face, while lips were lightly kissed with the new Rouge Coco Bloom Lipstick in Dream and Rouge Coco Gloss<\/a> in the almost-iridescent Aphrodite shade.<\/p>\n

The end result was a modern cosmetic melody that felt attuned to our current penchant for the mid-naughties \u2013 almost as if the historically sophisticated Chanel woman was hitting replay on her angst-filled teenage rocker days (but with decorated Chanel hair accoutrements, of course).<\/p>\n
