After the past 18 months, the 93rd Academy Awards\u00a0feels\u00a0<\/em>distinctly different. As a writer, the new capabilities on Zoom have allowed hundreds of journalists to join together for an expansive virtual media room. On the red carpet<\/a>, filmmakers and stars appear to have a sense of relief and gratitude for the in-person affair. And the nominees in particular are increasingly more inclusive of different cultures and ideas through storytelling (a far cry from the #OscarsSoWhite<\/a> controversy of years gone by).<\/p>\n

Chlo\u00e9 Zhao was recognized for Best Director and Best Picture for Nomadland<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>\u2013 a tale which follows a woman in her sixties as she travels throughout North America as a nomad after losing everything in the Great Recession. Emerald Fennell\u2019s Promising Young Woman<\/a> <\/em>has just won Best Original Screenplay \u2013 the film explores sexual assault, toxic masculinity, and a woman’s own complicity in the crime. And Daniel Kaluuya was honored for Judas and the Black Messiah,\u00a0<\/em>a dramatized true story on the betrayal of Fred Hampton, chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party in late-1960s Chicago.<\/p>\n
