Yeri Han isn’t quite sure what’s happening to her. Not in this particular moment because she is on Zoom<\/a> with <\/span>GRAZIA<\/span><\/i> and her translator from Los Angeles<\/a> where she readies for Sunday\u2019s 93rd annual Academy Awards,<\/a> but since the success of <\/span>Minari<\/span><\/i>. \u201cBeing invited to the Oscars is surreal,\u201d Han tells <\/span>GRAZIA<\/span><\/i>. \u201cOnce I step onto the red carpet, I think it will hit me. We are at the Oscars and our film has been recognized beyond our imagination.\u201d <\/span>Han is a South Korean indie-film and TV star who made her Hollywood debut in writer and director Lee Isaac Chung\u2019s deeply personal and semi-\u00adautobiographical film, <\/span>Minari<\/span><\/i><\/a>. She plays Monica, <\/span>a young Korean woman whose husband, Jacob, played by Steven Yeun<\/a>, drags his wife and two small children to a stretch of unsettled farmland in rural Arkansas. \u201c<\/span>For many Koreans, and Americans too, our movie gives them an opportunity to think about their own lives. To be able to be a part of this movie in itself is such a grateful experience for me whether it received so many awards or not.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Minari is up for six major awards of the night \u2014 Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Score, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay \u2014 so all eyes will be on the cast. Han still hasn\u2019t decided on a final look. \u201cI wonder if I can show it to you,\u201d she says excitedly. She can\u2019t, obviously, and instead she shows her nails on-screen. They\u2019re neutral because she is still weighing her options. \u201cI hope I don\u2019t trip and fall,\u201d Han said, laughing. \u201cI\u2019m mostly worried about that.\u201d She hopes <\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Youn Yuh-Jung<\/span><\/a> (who played Monica\u2019s mother in the film and is nominated for Best Supporting Actress) wins, and Steven Yeun, too.\u00a0 \u201cSteven has done wonderful things for and in this movie,\u201d she said. \u201cHe is a pioneer.\u201d But mostly, Han said, she just hopes Asia gets acknowledged.<\/span><\/p>\n

Han also credits the role with helping to understand the sacrifices parents often make to give their children a better life. \u201cMy parents were just like Monica and Jacob,\u201d she explained. \u201cThey married very young. When I was younger, I couldn\u2019t understand their lives but I\u2019ve come to understand they were struggling, too. They had their own growing pains. Just like Noel in the movie, I\u2019m the oldest daughter, too. I had to take care of my younger siblings. I was given responsibilities that could have been my parents\u2019. Even though the relationship I have with my parents is not lovey-dovey and touchy-feely \u2014 maybe that\u2019s the Korean way \u2014 I\u2019m so grateful this movie gave me an opportunity to understand my parents better.
