When the <a href=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/articles\/oscar-nominations-2021-full-list-academy-awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021 Golden Globe nominations<\/a> were announced in February, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association\u2019s lack of recognition for Coel\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I May Destroy You<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, her twelve-episode series for HBO and BBC One, written and co-directed by the Coel, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exploring a young women\u2019s journey in the aftermath of remembering sexual assault was shocking. Or as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/03\/arts\/television\/golden-globes-tv-snubs.html\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the New York Times<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wrote in its live blog of the nominations, \u201ca crime.\u201d And it begs the question whose stories deserve to be told? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rainn.org\/statistics\/victims-sexual-violence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">One in six American women experience sexual assault<\/a> in their lifetimes and women of color are more likely to be assaulted than white women. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New Yorker\u2019s <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/i-may-destroy-you-golden-globes\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doreen St. F\u00e9lix describes the show<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cbecause Coel focuses on hustling Black women and Black queer people, I could say that the show is political, but mostly the writing steers away from didacticism.\u201d Perhaps if the cast of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I May Destroy You <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resembled members of the Hollywood Foreign Press (read: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whiter, higher-income) it wouldn\u2019t be up for debate if the show was groundbreaking or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight:
