We don’t deserve Zendaya<\/a>. In a cover story with John David Washington for W Magazine<\/a>,<\/em> the actress has reflected on negative comments made toward her in the past, specifically her faux-locs at the 2015 Academy Awards. Of course, the 24-year-old couldn’t be more diplomatic.<\/p>\n

The comments in question were made by then Fashion Police<\/em> co-host Giuliana Rancic when criticizing red carpet looks from the Oscars ceremony. She said of Zendaya’s hair, \u201cI feel like she smells like patchouli oil. And weed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking back at the comments, the\u00a0Euphoria\u00a0<\/em>star believes it has sparked the potential for change within the media and within herself.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s how change happens,\u201d Zendaya said. \u201cAnd it made me think, ‘How could I always have a lasting impact on what people saw and associated with people of color?’\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time in 2015, Zendaya took to Instagram responding, \u201cThere is already a harsh criticism of African-American hair in society without the help of ignorant people who choose to judge others based on the curl of their hair.\u201d<\/p>\n

The following year, Zendaya penned an exclusive essay for GRAZIA<\/a>, writing to you all about the importance of talking about the Oscars incident, no matter how uncomfortable it is for some.<\/p>\n

“Do you think, as a society, we\u2019re making ground when it comes to engaging with women of color?” Zendaya penned in her essay for GRAZIA.\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact we\u2019re talking about this means we\u2019ve made progress.\u00a0There were times when people didn\u2019t even ask the question or didn\u2019t even care to ask it and now things are different,” she continued. You can read the full essay here.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n
