It\u2019s already been a rocky start to the 2021 awards season with the pandemic forcing ceremonies to adjust to being socially distanced and a controversial Golden Globe Awards<\/a>\u2019 nominees list prompting the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to admit it has no Black members. (A <\/span>Los Angeles Times<\/span><\/i> investigation alleged a further corrupt system<\/a>.)
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

But the show must go on, and following last night\u2019s biggest night in music\u2014the Grammys<\/a>\u2014all eyes turned to Hollywood for the announcem<\/span>ent of the 93rd annual Academy Awards 2021 nominees list. This year, Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra had the honors, announcing all 23 categories during a two-part livestream broadcast across the Academy’s social media accounts.<\/p>\n

After years of backlash for its lack of inclusion of women in directing categories, this year, <\/span>Nomadland<\/a>\u2019<\/span><\/i>s Chloe Zhao, the first Asian woman to win Best Director at the Golden Globes, was recognized in her catego<\/span>ry. So too was Emerald Fennell\u2014who plays Camilla Parker-Bowles in The Crown<\/em>\u2014for her feature-length debut Promising Young Woman. <\/em>This marks the first time more than one woman has been shortlisted for that prize in the awards’ 93-year history.<\/p>\n

Competing for best picture are The Father, <\/span><\/span>Judas and the Black Messiah, <\/span><\/span>Mank, <\/span><\/span>Minari, <\/span><\/span>Nomadland, <\/span><\/span>Promising Young Woman, <\/span><\/span>Sound of Metal <\/span><\/span><\/em>and <\/span><\/span>The Trial of the Chicago 7.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

The Academy Awards are set to air Sunday, April 25, on ABC<\/em>. Last year’s Oscars saw Parasite take home best picture, with Brad Pitt, Laura Dern, Joaquin Phoenix, and Ren\u00e9e Zellweger scooping the top acting prizes. <\/span><\/p>\n
