Unless you’re under the age of 35, it seems TikTok is no place to be – particularly if you’re John Mayer<\/a>. This week, the artist created an account on the popular video platform which was met with a wave of criticism from fearless<\/em> Taylor Swift<\/a> supporters (pun intended).<\/p>\n

On his first video on March 1 – footage of the artist trying the flip the camera – a number of negative comments appeared pertaining to Mayer and Swift’s relationship in 2009. One user commented, “We will never forget what you did to our girl Taylor,” while another had a more threatening tone, “This was not the right app to join, John … #dearjohn.”<\/p>\n

The controversy refers to a song written by Swift, “Dear John,” which details their toxic partnership. At the time Swift was 19 and Mayer was 32. Neither party confirmed the relationship but it was referred to in the media a number of times.<\/p>\n

In an interview with\u00a0Rolling Stone<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>in 2012, Mayer said, \u201cI never got an email. I never got a phone call. I was really caught off guard, and it really humiliated me at a time when I\u2019d already been dressed down. I mean, how would you feel if, at the lowest you\u2019ve ever been, someone kicked you even lower?\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cI will say as a songwriter that I think it\u2019s kind of cheap songwriting. I know she\u2019s the biggest thing in the world, and I\u2019m not trying to sink anybody\u2019s ship, but I think it\u2019s abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, \u2018Wait till he gets a load of this!\u2019 That\u2019s bullsh*t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mayer responded to the negative comments swiftly with a video of himself struggling to get in a word during an argument. It was titled “POV: You berating me and I’m hearing you out.”<\/p>\n

Despite the overwhelming criticism, the 43-year-old has continued posting to TikTok. So where is Swift in all of this?
