Salma Hayek<\/a> has detailed the traumatic tale behind the filming of a love scene in the 1995 thriller, Desperado<\/em>.<\/p>\n

A guest on Dax Shepard and Monica Padman\u2019s weekly podcast, Armchair Expert<\/em><\/a>, the Oscar-nominated actress opened up about how she struggled to film a love scene with co-star, Antonio Banderas, who played the long-haired, gun-slinging musician, El Mariachi, to Hayek\u2019s midriff-baring bibliophile, Carolina.<\/p>\n

While she was \u201cthrilled\u201d to be meandering across a dusty Mexican landscape with Banderas at the direction of film director, Robert Rodriguez, Hayek told Shepard and Padman that she wasn\u2019t aware there would be a love scene between El Mariachi and Carolina until after production on the film began.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh God, I\u2019m gonna be in trouble \u2013 but the love scene was not in the script,\u201d Hayek says. \u201cIt was demanded by the studio when they saw the chemistry test. I had a really, really hard time with that\u2026I don\u2019t enjoy the scene.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 54-year-old Frida<\/em> actress agreed to film the scene with a closed-set which included Banderas, Rodriguez, and Rodriguez\u2019s then-wife producer, Elizabeth Avell\u00e1n. The director would double as the sound guy and the camera operator.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, when we were going to start shooting, I started to sob,\u201d Hayek admits, adding she told those around her, \u201cI don’t know that I can do it. I’m afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the things I was afraid of was Antonio \u2014 he was an absolute gentleman and so nice, and we’re still super close friends \u2014 but he was very free,\u201d she says. \u201cIt scared me that for him, it was like nothing\u2026 I\u2019d never been in front of someone like that, in that situation\u2026 I started crying, and he was like, \u2018Oh my God. You’re making me feel terrible.\u2019 And I was so embarrassed that I was crying.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hayek insisted throughout the interview that Banderas and Rodriguez were \u201camazing\u201d and \u201cdidn\u2019t put the pressure on.\u201d Still, she was uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was not letting go of the towel,\u201d she says. \u201cThey would try to make me laugh. I would take it off for two seconds and start crying again. But we got through it. We did the best with what we could do at the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

It’s sure a different experience from Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio’s sex scene in the 1997 film, Titanic<\/em><\/a>. (Spoiler: The pair would talk about sex in between takes.)<\/p>\n

For those who haven’t seen the film, the love scene is chopped up into parts, the result of Hayek not being able to stay in character for long periods of time.<\/p>\n

While the Sony-backed Columbia Pictures blockbuster initially wanted to cast Cameron Diaz as Carolina, Hayek would land the role and it would become her breakout Hollywood film.<\/p>\n
