When Selena Gomez released Lose You To Love Me<\/em><\/a> last year \u2013 an ode to the time spent with Justin Bieber \u2013 the music video was easily the most watchable thing since\u2026 well, since a very long time. Speaking to Amy Schumer for Interview<\/em> magazine, Gomez told the comedian about the moment she felt like she was becoming herself again after her breakup from her long-time boyfriend.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wrote [the song] at the beginning of last year, and had just gotten out of treatment,” Gomez recalled. \u201cIt was a moment when I came back and I was like, \u2018I\u2019m ready to go into the studio with people I trust and start working on songs.\u2019 There was an air around it where people were very happy, because it was like I was going to finally be me. But I didn\u2019t necessarily see it that way at the time. When I wrote the song, I was basically saying that I needed to hit rock-bottom to understand that there was this huge veil over my face.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of deleting her Instagram and then doing a 180 by reactivating it to share her personal life, Gomez said it was a way to control the narrative in the paper. She said it was never her intention to become a tabloid. \u201cSo when things kind of happened that way, it got out of control,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd then I was like, ‘Wait, none of this is true.’ The way the media has sometimes tried to explain things has made it sound really bad, when in reality there\u2019s nothing wrong with the fact that I needed to go away or that I fell in love. I had to start opening up because people were taking away my narrative and it was killing me. I\u2019m so young and I\u2019m going to keep changing, and no one has the right to tell me how my life\u2019s going.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schumer asked whether people should be worried about Gomez, given all she’s gone through. “Millions of people have so much love for you, and when someone meets you, they can see your kindness and your intelligence and your vulnerability,\u201d Schumer said. “I think people worry about you. I\u2019ve worried about you. Should we be worried about you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Gomez replied. \u201cI\u2019ve gone through some really difficult stuff, and because of those moments, whether I liked it or not, a picture was painted of my life. That was scary because I didn\u2019t want it to affect my career.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t want what to affect your career? Your personal life?\u201d Schumer asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d Gomez said. \u201cIt got out of control when I was super young. I think it showed people that I was weak in certain moments, and that I had troubles. Some people just get off on building people up and then trying to bring them down\u2026. People worry about me because I\u2019ve had some trouble in the past. And it\u2019s kind, it is. But I\u2019m okay.
