What Is Netflix\u2019s New Horror Series The Body<\/em> About?<\/h2>\n

The eight-episode series follows a high-school dance team whose drug-addled initiation ritual goes horribly awry. Grace, the designated virgin sacrifice, begins acting strangely, and soon, inexplicable events start to plague the school. Releasing November 11, the show blends the familiar angst of teenagehood with dance competitions, sinful desires and apparitional visions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Creator Quinn Shephard, who also directed the Zoey Deutch-led black comedy <\/span>Not Okay<\/span><\/i> and another teen psychological drama, <\/span>The Blame<\/span><\/i>, has drawn inspiration from cult classics including <\/span>Carrie, Jennifer\u2019s Body, Heavenly Creatures <\/span><\/i>and<\/span> Mean Girls<\/span><\/i>. Arthur Miller’s <\/span>The Crucible<\/span><\/i>, which dramatises the Salem witch trials, also informs the show’s exploration of religious fervour and suspicion.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other teen classics seem to have made their mark too. The hazy fall palette, preppy school uniforms and the small-town setting wouldn’t look out of place in Gilmore Girls. The campy dance routines and rhinestone-cross-adorned Juicy tracksuits feel like a strong nod to <\/span>Euphoria<\/span><\/i>. Underneath the 2000s teen drama aesthetic lurks a generally unnerving feeling of eerie paranoia, \u00e0 la <\/span>Picnic at Hanging Rock<\/span><\/i>. Together, it\u2019s a nostalgic cocktail of sisterhood and the sacredly supernatural.<\/span><\/p>\n

Behind the scenes, Riley Keough, who worked with Shepard on true crime miniseries <\/span>Under the Bridge<\/span><\/i> and also starred as Daisy in <\/span>Daisy Jones and The Six<\/span><\/i>, serves as one of the show\u2019s executive producers. Kristina Bogic, Sara Boustany, Geena Meszaros, Shirely Chen, and Sofia Wylie form part of the dance troupe, and <\/span>The Traitors<\/span><\/i> winner Gabby Windey plays the girls\u2019 coach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And how should you watch it? Shepard told <\/span>Tudum<\/span><\/i> that she recommends a slumber party for the optimal viewing experience, \u201cI hope people eat popcorn while they watch this, even when <\/span>The Body <\/span><\/i>hits hard,\u201d she says. \u201cMaybe light some candles.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
