You really did. But the moment you told a coworker she looked amazing “for her age,” something shifted in the conversation – and not in a good way. Most of us have stumbled into this exact scenario at a party, a holiday dinner, or even the office break room. We toss out a comment we think is harmless, and suddenly we realize we have reduced a person to a number. The truth is, many of the things we casually say to people over 50 carry hidden assumptions we have never stopped to examine.

Why age-related small talk is trickier than you think

Etiquette expert Heidi Dulebohn frames polite conversation as something rooted in respect. It is about helping people feel comfortable rather than pressuring them to reveal personal information simply because someone else is curious. That principle sounds obvious, yet we violate it constantly – often without noticing.

What makes this particular minefield so easy to wander into is that age-related questions are not the only offenders. According to Dulebohn, there are at least seven common questions people should avoid directing at anyone over 50. They span topics from retirement plans to physical appearance to health status, and every one of them carries an unspoken assumption about what life after 50 is supposed to look like. So what exactly should you stop saying?

The remarks that do more damage than you realize

One of the biggest pitfalls is asking someone when they plan to retire. Dulebohn points out that this question assumes the person wants to retire, can afford to retire, or should already be thinking about leaving the workforce. In reality, many people are doing their most interesting work in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond. As a wise piece of advice Dulebohn once received puts it, you should never retire from something – you should retire to something. Many people do exactly that, transitioning into a new career or a new interest rather than stepping away from purpose altogether.

Another word to banish from your vocabulary in these conversations is “still.” According to Dulebohn, that single word can turn an innocent question into a judgment. Asking someone whether they are “still” working, “still” traveling, or “still” doing anything implies surprise that they remain capable or interested.

Then there is the grandchildren assumption. Unless you know for a fact that the person has grandchildren – and those grandchildren happen to be in the room with you – do not bring it up. You may think it is a warm, friendly topic, but you could be touching a nerve you know nothing about.

Questions about someone’s appearance are equally loaded. Topics like cosmetic procedures, hair loss, weight changes, wrinkles, and physical impairments are deeply personal. Even when the question is intended as a compliment, Dulebohn warns that it turns someone’s appearance into an object of inspection and judgment.

Health inquiries fall into the same category. Unless you have a close relationship and routinely discuss health matters together, that question is intrusive and out of line. Dulebohn is firm on this: being over 50 is not a medical condition, and it is not an open topic for casual conversation. She notes that even with her closest friend, who has shared many health issues over the years, she would never volunteer a question about her friend’s health unless her friend specifically asked for her opinion.

Equally damaging is any variation of the question that implies someone is too old for something – whether that something is clothing, dating, travel, starting a new business, physical fitness, learning a new skill, or going to a concert. Dulebohn explains that this kind of question imposes someone else’s idea of what a particular age is supposed to look like and how a person should behave.

And perhaps the most insidious habit of all is tacking the phrase “for your age” onto the end of a compliment. Saying someone looks great for their age immediately erases the positive intent, because you have just reminded the recipient that you think people of their age ordinarily do not look good. Dulebohn’s advice is blunt: if you have to add those three words, do not say it at all. Simply telling someone they look wonderful is gracious enough on its own.

What to talk about instead

Dulebohn acknowledges that no topic is completely safe with strangers, because you never know what might feel triggering to someone. However, she identifies several low-risk subjects that work well in social settings: food and restaurants, books, films and television, music, hobbies, and sometimes travel and places.

Her strongest recommendation, though, is even simpler than picking from that list. The safest subject is not really a subject at all – it is the lead the other person has already shown you they are comfortable discussing. If someone mentions they just returned from Italy, that is your invitation. Ask about Italy. Do not leap into asking whether they are married, whether they have children, or what they do for a living, because those subjects can come across as very intrusive to a stranger.

The real goal behind better conversations

Good etiquette is not about memorizing a list of forbidden phrases, Dulebohn emphasizes. It is about showing respectful curiosity within boundaries, being mindful of cultural nuances, and taking genuine interest in people without making them feel examined. The point is not to learn a special set of rules for talking to people over 50. The point is to stop treating age as the most interesting thing about someone. Be respectful, stick to low-risk subjects, and above all, be a great, active listener. That alone will take you further than any script ever could.

[3914

According to an Etiquette Expert, These Are the Questions You Should Never Ask Someone Over 50 - Grazia USA

<meta property="og:description" content="You meant it as a compliment.
