Some are bare-bones – a quick “ok” or “on my way.” Others are peppered with tiny yellow faces, hearts, or teardrops that do the emotional heavy lifting your words alone cannot. Most of us would call that a harmless habit, maybe even a lazy one. But recent research suggests that the way you use those small colorful symbols could reveal something surprisingly precise about how well you read other people’s feelings.

Your brain treats a smiley face more seriously than you think

A team at the University of Bournemouth in the United Kingdom set out to understand how our brains respond to emojis compared with real human faces. Their findings, published in the journal Psychophysiology, relied on two groups of volunteers. The first group of 24 people viewed photographs of real faces expressing four emotions – happiness, anger, sadness, or a neutral expression. A second group of 25 participants saw emoji faces displaying those same four emotions under similar conditions.

While each volunteer identified the correct expression from two options, researchers recorded their brain activity using electroencephalography, a technique that measures electrical signals across the scalp. What did they find? The brain reacted in strikingly similar regions and with very similar electrical patterns regardless of whether the stimulus was a human face or a digital emoji. In other words, as far as your neural circuitry is concerned, a grinning emoji is not all that different from a grinning colleague.

So what happens when you casually drop a laughing face into a group chat? Your recipient’s brain may be processing it with something close to the same seriousness it reserves for a real smile across the room.

Milliseconds that tell the whole story

The timing data from the Bournemouth study added a fascinating layer. Emoji-related brain signals appeared roughly 70 milliseconds after the image was displayed and peaked around 150 milliseconds. For real faces, the response started around 120 milliseconds and peaked near 160 milliseconds – a gap of only a few dozen milliseconds between the two.

Peak activity in both cases was concentrated in the posterior regions of the brain, areas long known for processing faces. In some instances, emojis actually produced cleaner, sharper signals than real faces. The likely reason is elegant in its simplicity: exaggerated smiles, pronounced frowns, wide-open or squinting eyes make emotional information easier to decode. Real human expressions, by contrast, tend to be more subtle and ambiguous.

This means every time you choose between a neutral thumbs-up and a beaming face with heart eyes, you may be unconsciously calibrating an emotional message that your recipient’s brain will parse almost as quickly as an in-person expression.

Emoji habits, emotional intelligence, and attachment style

A separate study published in the journal PLOS ONE explored the personality side of the equation. Researchers surveyed 320 adults about their emoji use in text messages, their emotional intelligence, and their attachment style – whether they identified as secure, avoidant, or anxious. Participants reported how often they added emojis depending on the recipient: friends, family, a romantic partner, or coworkers.

The results were telling. People who scored higher on emotional intelligence reported using emojis more frequently with friends, as though they were compensating for the absence of vocal tone and body language that text strips away. On the flip side, an avoidant attachment style – characterized by emotional distance in close relationships – was associated with less frequent emoji use in intimate exchanges, reflecting a more restrained emotional communication pattern overall.

The researchers did caution that these associations remain modest. Counting someone’s emojis is not a reliable shortcut to measuring their emotional intelligence. Still, the pattern is consistent enough to be meaningful: frequent, spontaneous emoji users appear to have a finely tuned emotional radar, both for perceiving feelings in others and for expressing their own.

What your texting style quietly says about you

Taken together, these two studies paint a coherent picture. Your brain processes emojis with almost the same neural machinery it uses for real faces. And the people who instinctively scatter emojis through their messages tend to score higher on measures of emotional awareness. None of this means you should start flooding every conversation with smiley faces to prove your empathy. But the next time you instinctively reach for a laughing-crying emoji instead of typing “that’s funny,” know that the impulse may reflect something genuinely sharp about the way you navigate the emotional world around you. That tiny icon is doing more work than you ever gave it credit for.

[3914

People Who Use the Most Emojis Possess a Psychological Trait Those Who Never Use Them Don't Have According to 2 Studies - Grazia USA

<meta property="og:description" content="You probably fire off dozens of texts every day without giving them a second thought.
