In a conversation with director Lulu Wang and writer-producer Diane Solway on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/gb\/podcast\/3-55\/id1303617644\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chanel Connects podcast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Knightley spoke about how uncomfortable she is with trying to portray the \u201cmale gaze\u201d while shooting sex scenes, revealing that while she doesn\u2019t have an \u201cabsolute ban\u201d on on-screen nudity, she now does when it comes to men.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t want it to be those horrible sex scenes where you&#8217;re all greased up and everybody&#8217;s grunting,\u201d she said. \u201cI&#8217;m not interested in doing that.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knightley &#8211; a mother of two &#8211; did, however, say things would be different if she was working on a film about motherhood, but that if that was the case, she\u2019d expect to be working on that story with women. \u201cIf I was making a story that was about that journey of motherhood and body acceptance, I feel like, I\u2019m sorry, but that would have to be with a female filmmaker,\u201d Knightley said. \u201cI don\u2019t have an absolute ban, but I kind of do with men.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12622\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12622\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12622\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/01\/GettyImages-1174975827.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1304\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12622\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: David Parry\/PA Wire<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;If it was about motherhood, literally about how extraordinary that body is, about how suddenly you&#8217;re looking at this body that you&#8217;ve got to know that is your own and is seen in this completely different way, and it&#8217;s changed in ways that are unfathomable to you before you become a mother, then, yeah, I&#8217;d totally be up for kind of exploring that with a woman who would understand that. But I feel very uncomfortable now trying to portray the male gaze,\u201d she explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knightley also candidly admitted that vanity also plays a part in her choices. \u201cSaying that, there\u2019s times where I go, \u2018Yeah, I completely see where this sex would be really good in this film and you basically just need somebody to look hot.\u2019 So therefore you can use somebody else, because I\u2019m too vain and the body has had two children now and I\u2019d just rather not stand in front of a group of men naked.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe all empathize with men hugely because, culturally, their experience is so explored,&#8221; she continued. We know so many aspects of even male sexuality. But we don\u2019t feel like men can say, \u2018Yes, I understand what you\u2019re talking about because I\u2019ve got this wealth of art and film and theatre and TV from your point of view.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12623\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12623\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12623\" src=\"https:\/\/graziamagazine.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2021\/01\/GettyImages-1033415982.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12623\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Axelle\/Bauer-Griffin\/FilmMagic<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015, Knightley had a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cno nudity clause\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> added to her film contracts after becoming a mother so she could have &#8220;total control&#8221; over which sex scenes she appears in. Last year she opened up about that decision, telling<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Financial Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, &#8220;I have been comfortable earlier with more nudity than I am now. I have had a kid, I am in my thirties, I am very happy with my body.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knightley has also previously spoken about the impossible position some women are left in where they have to pick between playing the flirt or the mother on screen. \u201cBefore motherhood, you\u2019re sexy, but if we talk about the whole vagina-splitting thing then that\u2019s terrifying; there\u2019s no sex there, so what we do is go into the virgin-mother retrofit, that\u2019s nice and safe,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.radio.com\/music\/entertainment-news\/keira-knightley-refuses-to-film-nude-scenes-as-a-mom-of-two\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">she said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The problem with those two images is I think very few women actually identify with them. Women are meant to play the flirt or the mother in order to get their voice heard. I can\u2019t.
