For Gen Z, being single is getting a rebrand. Instead of treating it as the awkward period between relationships, a growing number of young people are turning it into something to actively pursue \u2013 and TikTok has a name for it: solo-maxxing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The idea is simple: stop pouring time, money and emotional energy into dating and invest it back into yourself. Think solo dinners, trips with friends, career goals, financial independence and a carefully protected sense of peace. After years of dating apps, situationships and being ghosted<\/a>, the question is shifting from \u201cWhen will I meet someone?\u201d to \u201cDo I actually need to?\u201d<\/p>\n

For a generation increasingly comfortable with single life<\/a>, solo-maxxing is less about giving up on love than refusing to organize your life around finding it.<\/p>\n

What Solo-Maxxing Actually Means<\/h2>\n

Solo-maxxing is more than being single while waiting for someone better. It is the intentional decision to channel the time, money, and emotional energy usually spent on dating back into yourself: therapy before talking stages, savings before expensive dates, solo travel before couples\u2019 trips.<\/p>\n

On TikTok and Instagram, that means solo dinners<\/a>, wellness routines and museum days narrated like rom-coms. Turning \u201cI\u2019m alone\u201d into \u201cI\u2019m solo-maxxing\u201d reframes singlehood from something lacking into a strategy.<\/p>\n

Dating Is Getting Expensive<\/h2>\n

Money is part of the equation. According to the BMO Real Financial Progress Index, the average all-in cost of a US date reached around $189 in 2026, with Gen Z spending about $205. Almost half of Gen Z respondents said dating costs clash with their financial goals.<\/p>\n

Add rising restaurant prices, rent and student debt, and \u201cI\u2019d rather invest in myself\u201d starts sounding less like a mantra and more like financial planning.<\/p>\n

Then there is the emotional cost. Years of swiping have helped normalize ghosting, breadcrumbing and situationships. In a MyIQ poll, 46% of respondents said dating apps make relationships feel more disposable.<\/p>\n

For a generation obsessed with \u201cprotecting your peace,\u201d logging off can feel like self-preservation.<\/p>\n

Empowerment Or Avoidance?<\/h2>\n

Social scientist Bella DePaulo, author of Single at Heart<\/em>, has long argued that some people genuinely thrive outside coupledom. For them, solo-maxxing simply gives a name to a fulfilling life built around friendships, work, financial independence and personal interests.<\/p>\n

But there is a difference between choosing singlehood because it makes you happy and avoiding intimacy because it scares you. If dating feels impossible rather than simply unappealing, or if \u201cprotecting your peace\u201d means withdrawing from friends and family too, the trend can tip into isolation.<\/p>\n

The Secret To Healthy Solo-Maxxing<\/h2>\n

Humans still need connection. Chronic loneliness<\/a> has been associated with serious long-term health risks, but connection does not have to mean romance.<\/p>\n

Running clubs, creative workshops, dinner groups and singles events are giving Gen Z new ways to build community offline without making finding a partner the goal.<\/p>\n

If you are embracing a solo era, use the extra time and money intentionally: nurture friendships, learn something, travel, save, or go to therapy. Stay curious about connection without treating romance as an obligation.<\/p>\n

Solo-maxxing can be a power move.
