Every morning, millions of people make coffee and throw the grounds straight in the trash. Every cleaning cupboard in the country has a bottle of white vinegar in it. Put the two together, and you get one of the cheapest, most satisfying cleaning pastes there is: gritty enough to scrub, acidic enough to cut through grease, and made from something you were about to throw away. It is a trick that keeps resurfacing on kitchen-hack lists, and for once, there is real logic behind it. Here is what the mix is actually good for, and the places you should never use it.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Why the combination works<\/b><\/h2>\n

Each ingredient brings something the other lacks. Used coffee grounds are gritty but soft, which makes them a gentle natural scrub. “Coffee grounds are mildly abrasive and help scrub away stuck-on food without harsh chemicals,” Karina Toner, a cleaning expert at Spekless, told Homes & Gardens<\/a>. Coffee is also slightly acidic, which helps loosen grease.<\/span><\/p>\n

White vinegar adds a stronger dose of acid. It breaks down greasy films and dissolves the mineral deposits that leave dull, chalky marks around taps and on dishes. Mixed together, you get a damp, grainy paste: the grounds do the scrubbing, the vinegar does the dissolving, and neither needs anything stronger to work. It belongs to the same family of pantry tricks as mixing baking soda, vinegar and lemon<\/a><\/strong>: simple ingredients, each doing one job well.<\/span><\/p>\n

What to use it for<\/b><\/h2>\n

Greasy pots and pans.<\/strong> This is where the paste shines. Mix two or three tablespoons of used grounds with just enough white vinegar to make them damp, rub the paste over the greasy area with a sponge, leave it for a few minutes, then scrub and rinse. One honest note: cleaning testers have found that for truly burnt-on food, the classic baking soda and vinegar method still performs better. Coffee and vinegar is best for grease and everyday grime.<\/span><\/p>\n

Grill grates and oven racks.<\/strong> The same paste, scrubbed with a stiff brush, helps lift the greasy residue that builds up on grates and racks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stainless steel sinks.<\/strong> A light scrub with the paste, followed by a thorough rinse, removes grease and water marks. Rinse well, since grounds can leave a brownish residue in seams.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lingering smells.<\/strong> Coffee grounds are a well-known odor absorber. Here, though, the vinegar is not needed: a small open container of dry used grounds in the fridge or freezer helps neutralize smells, much like baking soda. Rubbing a pinch of grounds between your hands after chopping garlic or onions works too.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where you should never use it<\/b><\/h2>\n

Natural does not mean harmless everywhere. Do not pour it down the drain.<\/strong> Opinions vary, but many plumbers warn that coffee grounds do not dissolve and can build up into clogs over time, especially combined with grease; scrape them into the trash or compost instead. Keep it away from natural stone.<\/strong> Vinegar’s acid can etch marble, limestone and some granite countertops, leaving permanent dull spots. Avoid delicate finishes and non-stick coatings too, which any abrasive can scratch.<\/span><\/p>\n

And despite what some online lists suggest, do not use the mixture in the garden.<\/strong> Coffee grounds on their own can go into the compost, but vinegar is acidic enough to damage plants, which is why it is sometimes used as a natural weed killer. One last tip: use the grounds fresh or dry them first, since damp grounds left sitting around can grow mold and create the very smells you were trying to remove.<\/span><\/p>\n

A zero-waste habit worth keeping<\/b><\/h2>\n

The appeal of the trick is as much about what it saves as what it cleans. It turns a daily waste product into a scrub, costs almost nothing, and fits neatly alongside the other low-tech kitchen methods that keep proving their worth, from cleaning the microwave with a lemon<\/a><\/strong> to freshening the air with a pot of spices<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Coffee grounds scrub, vinegar dissolves, and together they make a cheap, effective paste for greasy pans, grill grates and stainless steel.
