Bootcut jeans are back, and they came with a set of instructions nobody questioned: the clue is in the name. You wear them with boots. A heeled ankle boot peeking out from the flare, maybe a pointed-toe one if you are feeling sharp. It is the pairing the cut was literally designed around. But this fall, the chicest women in New York have quietly stopped following the manual, and the shoe they have switched to is one you almost certainly already own. Gigi Hadid made the case better than any runway could.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The outfit that changed the rule<\/b><\/h2>\n

Earlier this month, Hadid was photographed stepping out in New York in a pair of mid-wash blue bootcut jeans, a red T-shirt and a knit draped over her shoulders. On her feet: not boots, not sneakers, but a pair of smart black leather loafers. As Who What Wear’s fashion team pointed out<\/a>, the pairing made the season’s favorite denim cut feel instantly easier to wear, and a little more grown-up.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is not an isolated moment. The Hadid sisters have spent the year proving bootcut jeans are the most versatile denim silhouette of 2026. Bella has worn hers with pointed-toe boots in January and with brown kitten heels in the spring. Gigi’s loafers are the fall answer, and arguably the most wearable of the three.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why loafers work so well with a bootcut<\/b><\/h2>\n

The logic is about proportion. A bootcut flares gently from the knee, which means the hem naturally covers part of the foot. With a chunky boot, that flare can read heavy. With a sneaker, it can look unfinished. A loafer is slim and low, so the hem falls cleanly over it and leaves just the front of the shoe showing, which lengthens the leg and makes the whole outfit look considered rather than casual. How to copy it<\/b><\/h2>\n

Start with the length, because it makes or breaks the look. With loafers, the hem of a bootcut should graze the top of the shoe, covering the heel and the back of the loafer while the toe stays visible. Too long and the fabric pools on the floor; too short and you lose the elegance of the flare. If your favorite pair was cut for heels, a tailor can take it up in minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then keep the loafer sleek. A classic black or dark brown leather style with a slim sole reads most polished; a chunkier lug-sole loafer works too, but gives a more casual, slightly ’90s effect. Mid-wash denim, like Hadid’s, is the easiest to style, while a dark indigo bootcut with a black loafer is the sharpest office-ready version. On top, follow her lead and keep it simple: a plain T-shirt, a fine knit, or a sweater thrown over the shoulders is all it needs.<\/span><\/p>\n
