Before she was the Princess of Wales, before the balcony kisses and coordinated family portraits, Kate Middleton was a college girl with a course load, a flat full of friends and, as it turns out, a very handsome boyfriend.<\/p>\n

St Andrews 2001 \u2013 When Kate And William Were Just Friends<\/h2>\n

In 2001, William and Kate arrived at the University of St Andrews in Scotland like any other nervous first years, apart from the security detail and global press interest trailing one of them. They both enrolled in History of Art, lived in the same halls and floated through the same small-town social circle of shared kitchens, student bars and supermarket runs in fleece pullovers.<\/p>\n

The story Seward tells on the podcast A Right Royal Podcast<\/i> is almost disarmingly ordinary. During their first vacation from university, William drove down to Bucklebury, the Berkshire village where the Middletons lived. No motorcade, no tiaras \u2013 just a prince turning up at his friend\u2019s family home and suggesting the local pub.<\/p>\n

He took her to the local pub, and they had a long, long chat<\/q>, Seward says. William was struggling with his subject and the expectations hanging off it. Kate listened, then gave him the kind of blunt, loyal-friend advice every woman has handed out in a booth somewhere: if you are miserable, change it. If you are not happy doing History of Art, try to do something else. Do Geography or something,<\/q> she apparently told him. He did exactly that, switching to Geography and going on to graduate with that degree.<\/p>\n

The Mystery Of Kate\u2019s \u201cVery Handsome Boyfriend\u201d<\/h2>\n

Here is the twist that has sent royal-watch internet into a minor frenzy. At the time of that Bucklebury heart to heart, Kate was not secretly pining for the prince. At the time she had a very handsome boyfriend<\/q>, Seward says. The relationship with William, she adds, developed \u201cvery gradual[ly]\u201d from friendship.<\/p>\n

Seward does not name the boyfriend, but long established reporting around St Andrews points to Rupert Finch, a fourth year law student often described as tall, dark, handsome and, in the words of one friend, the \u201cultimate catch\u201d on campus. Kate dated Finch in those early months while William orbited as a close friend who shared classes and complaints rather than kisses.<\/p>\n

It is worth underlining that this is not salacious reveal so much as context. Finch went on to become a lawyer, marry and remain on cordial terms with the Waleses. Fast forward to their 2011 wedding at Westminster Abbey and the three children who followed \u2013 Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis \u2013 and Seward argues that those pub chats and flatmate dinners are still the secret sauce. She listened to him and she advised him\u2026 she was such a good friend<\/q>, Seward says, framing that emotional safety net as the foundation of a marriage that has weathered 15 years of scrutiny.<\/p>\n

For modern royals, image is currency, but what keeps William and Kate\u2019s brand from feeling purely curated is precisely this origin story. She was the friend who told him to change his major, not the girl angling for a coronet. He was the guy who drove hours for a moody pint with a confidante, not just the heir sizing up a bride.
