You glance at the thermometer, see the number hovering somewhere in the low thirties, and figure your dog can handle a normal-length walk. They have fur, after all. But the reality is more nuanced than most of us assume, and veterinarians say the threshold for real danger is lower – and more consequential – than you might think. What feels like a brisk but manageable chill to you could already be putting your pet at risk for frostbite, hypothermia, cracked paws and exposure to toxic chemicals scattered across every sidewalk in your neighborhood.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Why cold weather is riskier for dogs than we tend to believe<\/b><\/h2>\n

We often assume a thick coat of fur is enough natural insulation. But according to Dr. Aly Cohen, an extension veterinarian for the Cornell Riney Canine Health Center, temperature tolerance varies dramatically from one dog to the next. Breed, size, coat thickness, age and overall health all play a role in how well any individual dog regulates body heat in winter.<\/span><\/p>\n

That means the temperature considered dangerous for a chihuahua may feel perfectly fine to a husky. Still, Dr. Cohen notes that once the mercury drops to 32 degrees Fahrenheit or below, it is time to limit outdoor time for all dogs, regardless of breed. And below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, dogs<\/a> <\/strong>should only venture outside for very brief bathroom breaks – nothing more.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even in milder winter conditions, between roughly 45 and 32 degrees Fahrenheit, some dogs already show clear signs of discomfort. Shivering, refusing to walk, tucking the tail and whining are all signals worth watching for. And here is a factor many pet parents overlook: a dog that has not been acclimated to cold weather is at greater risk during a sudden cold snap than one accustomed to freezing temperatures.<\/span><\/p>\n

Which dogs are most vulnerable, and what the cold actually does to them<\/b><\/h2>\n

Smaller breeds, especially those with short hair or thin coats, lose heat quickly, according to Dr. Cohen. Puppies face heightened danger because their bodies have not yet developed the ability to regulate temperature efficiently. Older dogs often struggle too, largely because a slower metabolism and reduced muscle mass make it harder for them to stay warm. Dogs with medical conditions such as heart disease, kidney disease, endocrine disorders or Cushing’s disease also have a notably low tolerance for frigid weather, according to both Dr. Cohen and Dr. Hannah Hart, a veterinarian at Chewy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond the cold itself, winter introduces a second, less obvious hazard: chemical de-icers. Ice melt and rock salt – those white, clear or blue crystals covering roads, driveways, parking lots and sidewalks – are typically made with sodium chloride and other minerals. Dr. Hart explains that these substances are dangerous for dogs to ingest, much like regular table salt. If a dog licks too much off the ground or from their own paws, it can lead to salt poisoning, dehydration and kidney issues. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, low energy, shaking, seizures, drooling and disorientation. Contact with de-icers can also irritate paw pads, causing redness, excessive licking, open sores and skin infections.<\/span><\/p>\n

Products labeled as pet-safe are typically free from sodium chloride and instead use chemicals like urea and magnesium chloride. Dr. Cohen recommends using these at home when possible, but cautions that pet-safe does not mean zero risk. These alternatives are simply less irritating, though some dogs may still be sensitive. Paw-licking after contact should still be prevented.<\/span><\/p>\n

Practical ways to keep your dog safe once temperatures fall<\/b><\/h2>\n

Winter dog safety comes down to two essentials: keeping your pet warm and protecting their paws. Not every dog needs a coat – highly active dogs that generate plenty of body heat while running and playing may be fine without one. But Dr. Hart notes that smaller dogs, those with short fur like chihuahuas and greyhounds, and those with thin skin due to age or medical conditions benefit most from an insulating layer. Even large, thick-coated breeds can use a thin, water-resistant layer to stay dry in snow and freezing rain, according to Dr. Cohen. Reflective outerwear is also worth considering since daylight hours shrink in winter, and your dog may need to go out in low-light conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

For paw protection, veterinarians recommend booties as the most effective barrier against icy surfaces and toxic salt. If your dog will not tolerate them, Dr. Cohen suggests cleaning paws, legs, stomach and chest with wipes immediately after coming inside, especially for dogs with bodies low to the ground. Applying a protective paw balm helps prevent dryness and cracking. For minor de-icer exposure, a soft cloth with lukewarm water works. For larger exposures, Dr. Hart recommends gentle dish soap, a lukewarm rinse and thorough drying. Monitoring for redness, cracking, limping or discomfort afterward is important, and you should contact your vet if anything looks unusual.<\/span><\/p>\n

To discourage your dog from licking salt off the ground during walks, Dr. Hart advises using a shorter leash and reinforcing the behavior of ignoring salt with high-value treats and favorite toys. Introducing booties indoors first, with treats as positive reinforcement for walking in them calmly, can help dogs adjust before heading outside.<\/span><\/p>\n

The bottom line for pet parents this winter<\/b><\/h2>\n

The key number to remember is 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Below that point, your dog should only be outside long enough for a quick bathroom break. At 32 degrees and below, every dog’s outdoor time should be limited. And if your home feels comfortable to you, Dr. Cohen notes it should feel comfortable for your dog, too – though adding an extra blanket to their bed or crate never hurts if they tend to seek out warm spots.
