\"\"The first cool mornings of September have found a new favorite companion, a jacket that crosses softly over the chest and lets its wide sleeves sway with every step. The kimono jacket glided through the fall 2026 shows in Paris, from Nigo<\/strong>‘s sharp tailoring at Kenzo to the poetic drapery of Yohji Yamamoto<\/strong>, and now it’s slipping into the most stylish closets of the season. It goes over denim for a coffee run and over a silk slip for dinner, with the ease of a robe and the polish of a blazer. Paris fell for the kimono in the nineteenth century, when Japonisme swept through the city and silk robes from Japan found their way into fashionable homes as refined dressing gowns. In the early 1900s Paul Poiret<\/strong> borrowed its loose, generous cut to set women free from the corset, wrapping his clients in opulent coats that fell straight from the shoulders. Around the same time Madeleine Vionnet<\/strong> was studying its flat, geometric construction to create dresses that moved with the body. The dialogue grew even richer when Kenzo Takada<\/strong> arrived in Paris in 1965 with his joyful blend of French and Japanese style. In 1981 Yohji Yamamoto<\/strong> made his Paris debut with a radically new way of wrapping the body in fabric.<\/p>\n

In more recent years the kimono has inspired some of fashion’s most theatrical shows. For Dior’s spring 2007 haute couture, John Galliano<\/strong> drew on his travels in Japan and imagined what he called “origami meets Madame Butterfly.” He sent out crystal-embroidered jackets with folded collars and delicately pleated gowns, then closed the show with an origami-inspired wedding dress. At Alexander McQueen, Sarah Burton<\/strong> gave the kimono a bolder spirit for spring 2015 by picturing geishas with a military edge. A season later, Alessandro Michele<\/strong> slipped a kimono decorated with birds into his dreamy early Gucci wardrobe.<\/p>\n

This fall the story takes a more intimate turn. In January, Nigo staged the Kenzo menswear show inside Takada’s former home in the Bastille neighborhood. The house was inspired by his father’s tea house in Himeji and comes complete with bamboo and a koi pond. There Nigo set kimono lapels on sharp suits that any girl would happily steal. In March, Yamamoto returned to the kimono with a poet’s restraint, playing with the way fabric wraps and folds around the figure. He closed his show with printed dresses carrying imagery from Katsushika Hokusai<\/strong>‘s woodcuts, like pages torn from an Edo-period sketchbook.<\/p>\n

The magic of the kimono jacket lies in balance. Its sleeves are generous, so keep the rest of the look slim, with straight-leg jeans or tailored cigarette trousers and a pair of polished loafers. A leather belt cinched at the waist gives the silhouette a flattering shape and a slightly more urban mood, while the original sash keeps things soft and romantic.<\/p>\n

As the temperatures drop, reach for quilted versions or cozy wool, perfect over a fine turtleneck on a breezy afternoon. For evening, a velvet or jacquard kimono thrown over a satin slip dress turns any dinner into an occasion.
