In June 1994, Princess Diana stepped out at London’s Serpentine Gallery in a dress that said what the palace would not. Three decades later, that silk still crackles with subtext.<\/p>\n

This December, the original \u201crevenge dress\u201d is leaving its Scottish closet and heading to Sotheby’s New York for a standalone fashion evening sale. On December 9, the black silk dress will be the star lot of Luxury Week, carrying an estimate of $150,000 to $300,000. It is the first time the piece has returned to the block since Diana herself sent it to auction in 1997. And yes, part of the price will still fund the kind of causes she cared about.<\/p>\n

The Little Black Dress That Changed Palace Politics<\/h2>\n

Picture the scene: June 29, 1994, a humid London evening, camera flashes waiting for a princess to look suitably tragic. Earlier that day, then Prince Charles’s interview confessing to infidelity was set to air. The official script said Diana should stay home and keep a low profile. Instead, she called an audible and pulled out a dress she had owned for three years and once dismissed as too daring.<\/p>\n

The off the shoulder Christina Stambolian design had been hanging quietly in her wardrobe since the early nineties. She was meant to wear Valentino. At the last minute, she swerved to this black silk number that hugged the body, flashed the legs and ignored every unwritten rule of royal dressing. \u201cShe wanted to look a million dollars,\u201d her former stylist Anna Harvey says. The result was less compliant princess, more Odile in Swan Lake<\/i>.<\/p>\n

When she stepped out at the Vanity Fair fundraising dinner at the Serpentine Gallery, shoulders bare, pearl choker gleaming, red nails clutching a clutch, the press lost its collective mind. The images ran everywhere. Tabloids promptly christened it the \u201crevenge dress,\u201d a title that has its own Wikipedia entry now. In one walk from car to doorway, she reframed herself from wronged wife to woman in control of the narrative \u2013 using nothing but a little black dress.<\/p>\n

From Serpentine Gallery To Sotheby\u2019s New York<\/h2>\n

Fast forward more than 30 years and the original Stambolian piece is going up for auction in a standalone fashion evening sale in New York on December 9, during its buzzy Luxury Week. The estimate sits at $150,000 to $300,000, significant but still conservative in the current market for Diana memorabilia. Crucially, the auction house is clear that this is not a replica or screen costume \u2013 it is the exact dress she wore that night.<\/p>\n

The dress itself is classic early nineties drama: black silk crepe, off the shoulder neckline, asymmetric hem that hits just above the knee. Stambolian later compared it to the dark swan in Swan Lake<\/i>, and you can see why. Before the New York sale, Sotheby’s will send it on a mini world tour, with exhibitions in London, Hong Kong and Geneva before it lands in Manhattan for the pre sale view. Expect a glass case, hushed lighting and people whispering, like they have wandered into a particularly chic church.<\/p>\n

Back in the early 90s, Diana reportedly paid about \u00a3900 for the dress. When she consigned it to her famous charity auction in June 1997, it sold at Christie’s New York for \u00a339,098 to a Scottish couple, Grahame and Briege Mackenzie. This time, Sotheby’s guidance of $150,000 to $300,000 reflects not just inflation but three decades of myth building. Given that her black sheep sweater recently fetched more than $1.1 million and a Victor Edelstein evening gown approached seven figures, no one will be surprised if bidding leaps past the top estimate.<\/p>\n

How The Dress Left Diana\u2019s Wardrobe<\/h2>\n

The revenge dress very nearly never saw the light of a flashbulb again. Diana never repeated it in public, even though she re-wore plenty of other favorites. Instead, in June 1997, just weeks before her death, she selected it as one of 79 dresses to sell for charity. At Christie’s New York on June 26, 1997, the dress sold among 79 gowns Diana offered for charity, achieving \u00a339,098.
