\"\"George Clooney<\/strong> collected the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Sala Grande on Wednesday evening, wearing a Giorgio Armani tuxedo and the expression of a man who has done this before. Beside him for the opening of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival and the premiere of Ink<\/em>, Amal Clooney<\/strong> appeared in a custom gown by Haider Ackermann<\/strong> for Tom Ford<\/strong>, black from the neckline to the toe, and the simplicity of that description bears almost no relation to what the dress is actually doing.<\/p>\n

A Dress Built Rather Than Draped<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\"\"The construction is where the interest lies. Cut in black silk taffeta into her preferred column silhouette, the gown is divided into narrow sculptural panels and worked with irregular pleating so sharp it reads as folded paper rather than fabric. Sheer georgette panels run along the sides, introducing transparency where the eye expects solidity, and the whole thing is finished with a sleek geometric neckline rendered in patent leather. A high slit opens along the back. Venice happens to be the correct city for this. Mariano Fortuny<\/strong> established his workshop at the Palazzo Pesaro Orfei and patented his method of pleating silk in 1909, producing the Delphos<\/em> gowns that hung on women like fluted columns and made the technique synonymous with the lagoon. Ackermann’s pleating goes in an entirely different direction, angular where Fortuny’s was liquid, and the reference remains impossible to miss.<\/p>\n

The Shoes, the Clutch, and a New Chapter<\/strong><\/h1>\n

\"\"The finish stayed monochrome to the last detail. Amal Clooney wore the Tom<\/strong> Ford<\/strong> Vertigo<\/strong><\/em> pump in black patent leather, a d’Orsay silhouette cut away at the sides with a sharply pointed toe, a 105mm stiletto heel and a logo-engraved ankle strap, carrying a matching patent clutch so the sheen ran uninterrupted from collarbone to floor. The choice marks a genuine departure. Her previous Venice appearances leaned toward Old Hollywood, from the butter yellow Atelier<\/strong> Versace<\/strong> with its cascading lace train to vintage Jean-Louis<\/strong> Scherrer<\/strong>, all volume and romance. This gown arrives from the opposite tradition, restrained in palette and rigorous in cut, and it belongs to the run of Ackermann pieces she has been wearing all week, including the olive silk blazer, tank and shorts she chose for a separate appearance the previous evening.
