One colleague tells you, “Own it, laugh it off.” Another whispers, “Do not make a joke, they will never promote you.”

We are constantly told that if we cannot laugh at ourselves, we are the problem – uptight, fragile, no fun at parties. But if you are a woman who has already been called “too emotional”, “too much”, or “too big for your boots”, the idea of volunteering as the punchline can feel less like confidence and more like self-sabotage. So should we lean into self-mockery or retire the “I am such a mess” bit for good?

Why We Are So Obsessed With Laughing At Ourselves

Culturally, self-deprecation is everywhere. Late-night hosts open with it. Influencers caption their own wardrobe malfunctions with it. Your most stylish friend will post a mirror selfie in a flawless SS26 look and write, “Just a raccoon in lipstick.”

Psychologists get why this appeals. A generally playful outlook – finding lightness in stress, including your own – is linked to better mental health, relationships and coping. In one lab study, when people were unexpectedly shown distorted “fun-house mirror” images of their own faces, about four in five at least smiled and many laughed. Most of us can genuinely find ourselves funny.

The catch is that “laughing at yourself” is not one single behavior. There is a big difference between chuckling at your smudged mascara and turning your entire personality into “the girl who always messes up.”

The Fine Line Between Self-Deprecating And Self-Defeating

The Four Flavors Of Humor

Researchers talk about four main humor styles. Affiliative humor is the friendly kind – teasing that brings people together. Self-enhancing humor is what you use to get through stress, like joking about the chaos of parenting or your cursed commute.

Then there is aggressive humor, which targets other people, and self-defeating humor, which targets you. Think of the woman in the meeting who constantly calls herself dumb so everyone else stays comfortable. Same “laugh at me” energy, very different consequences.

When Self-Mockery Is Quietly Self-Care

For years, self-defeating humor was treated as automatically toxic, supposedly a sign of low self-esteem and even suicidal thoughts. But recent work by psychologist Sonja Heintz complicates that picture. In her studies, many people who joked at their own expense were not falling apart. They described it as a way to cope with insecurity and connect with others.

The difference seems to be tone and variety. If you can also laugh with friends, laugh at absurd situations, and not only at your own body, brain or bank account, self-mockery can be part of a healthy mix. As one humor researcher puts it, “If someone takes themselves very seriously, it is hard for them to enjoy humor at all,” Heintz says.

Red Flags Your Jokes Are Hurting You

You feel smaller and a little sick after the laugh, not lighter.

You repeat the same brutal lines – about your looks, weight, age – like a script.

People go quiet, change the subject, or rush to reassure you instead of genuinely laughing.

You almost never make jokes that do not involve running yourself down.

If this sounds familiar, your humor may be less “cute self-drag” and more internalized bullying.

What Happens Socially When You Laugh At Yourself

The Benign Blunder Rule

A 2026 series of experiments looked at how people react when you handle a small faux pas – think tripping in heels or mangling a client’s name, then fixing it. Across thousands of observers, those who saw someone laugh at themselves rated that person as warmer, more competent and more authentic than someone who just looked mortified.

Crucial detail: nobody was harmed. When the mistake actually hurts someone, cracking a joke makes you seem emotionally off. So a good rule of thumb at work or on a date: if the only casualty is your ego or your silk shirt, a quick self-laugh is disarming. If someone else paid the price, apologize first and save the humor for much later, if ever.

Power, Gender And The Office

There is also the status problem. A male CEO can joke, “Clearly I cannot work the projector,” and it reads as charming because everyone already assumes he is competent. A junior woman, especially from a marginalized group, making the same joke risks confirming people’s worst stereotypes.

That does not mean you must be humorless in order to be taken seriously. It does mean being strategic. Use self-mockery around harmless quirks – your obsession with your planner, your tragic plant-care skills – not your intelligence, body or pay grade.

Why Some People Hate Being Laughed At

Gelotophobia Is A Thing

If the idea of anyone laughing near you makes your stomach flip, psychologists have a word for that: gelotophobia, the fear of being laughed at. It often traces back to harsh parenting or being the class punchline for months or years. People high in this trait are more likely to avoid friendships and report loneliness and depression.

The opposite, gelotophilia, is enjoying being laughed at – the friend who happily re-enacts her worst Hinge date so everyone can scream-laugh together. Both are extremes. Most of us sit somewhere between, flinching at some jokes and playing the clown in others.

If That Is You, Start Extremely Small

If your history makes self-deprecation feel dangerous, you do not have to start with “joking about your trauma” school. Try this instead: for one week, keep a tiny “playfulness diary.” Each night, write down three moments that felt the tiniest bit amusing – the barista misheard your name, the group chat chaos, the way your cat judged your outfit.

Research from psychologist René Proyer suggests this kind of exercise nudges people to see life, and themselves, as slightly more playful, with boosts in mood that can last months.

How To Practice Gentle Self-Mockery

Run A Quick Motive Check

Before you default to “I am such an idiot,” pause. Would I say this exact line to a friend I love? Does it make me feel a notch freer, or like I just punched myself in public? If the answer is the latter, swap the joke or skip it.

Use Light Lines For Harmless Chaos

For the benign blunders – coffee on the blouse, lipstick on your teeth, forgetting you are on mute – keep a few gentle, rehearsed lines. “Well, that is one way to pattern a cream suit.” “My brain and my mouth are clearly on different Wi-Fi networks today.” Delivered with a shrug, not a wince, they tell people you can bend without breaking.

Laugh with yourself, not at yourself, and make sure the joke is never more cruel than anything you would say about a friend over that post-work martini.

[3914

Should You Laugh at Yourself More or Less? — Psychologists on the Cost of the 'I'm a Mess' Persona - Grazia USA

<meta property="og:description" content="You spill cold brew on your cream trousers right before the all-hands, and the dark stain is screaming louder than your VP.
