Delphine Jelk<\/a> knows heat. Literally and figuratively. It\u2019s high summer when I hop on a video call with the Guerlain<\/a> perfumer, and Paris is deep in a historical heatwave. \u201cAir conditioning in Europe\u2026 we are not very good at it\u201d she says. \u201cWe can\u2019t sleep without it, it\u2019s crazy\u2026 so we definitely need ice everywhere!\u201d<\/p>\n

The wall behind the desk in Jelk\u2019s office is covered in imagery and ephemera in ice blue; a vision board that seems to speak to the moment. But it has less to do with feeling cool than conjuring heat \u2014 the heat of the moment, to be exact, when day turns to night and that feeling of limitless possibility takes hold.<\/p>\n

The legendary perfumer \u2014 one of just a few female creators in the fragrance world \u2014 has been working on a new interpretation of Guerlain\u2019s L\u2019Heure Bleue<\/a> for the past three years. The fruit of her labors lands on counters today, along with a collection of Rouge G lipstick cases inspired by the blue hour, that elusive transition just after sunset and before the magic of the darkness ensues.<\/p>\n

The original L\u2019Heure Bleue, one of Guerlain\u2019s most iconic perfumes, was first created over a century ago by Jacques Guerlain himself as a tribute to his wife and great love, Andr\u00e9e \u201cLili\u201d Bouffet. To recreate the scent for a modern wearer, Jelk leaned in to new synthetic fragrance molecules that were not available at the time of the original, such as Cascalone, \u201cto express the scent of the sky,\u201d but \u201ckept the soul\u201d of the fragrance by combining notes of orange flower, vanilla and two types of iris \u2014 a tincture distilled from roots and a unique iris butter \u2014 for a powdery softness \u201cthat almost smells like marshmallow\u201d and stays on skin. \u201cFor me, it was the way Jacques Guerlain translated the idea of the blue hour in a poetic way,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Guerlain would no doubt approve of the all new L\u2019Heure Bleue, and how it profoundly brings to life the vision of this serene, yet wildly optimistic time of day for a new generation. \u201cI translated this idea as romantic, blurred shades of blue \u2014 there are no straight lines,\u201d Jelk says. \u201cThe day is ending, night is coming, everything is possible.\u201d In French, there is a saying to capture the feeling, which translates loosely to \u2018between dogs and the wolf,\u2019 she says. \u201cI know there is nothing like this in English,\u201d Jelk laughs.<\/p>\n

While the aroma conjures romance, it is decidedly not stereotypical. \u201cIn the perfume shop, it\u2019s usually pink for girls and blue for boys, but I really like this idea of blue for girls,\u201d Jelk admits. \u201cIt\u2019s like a boyfriend shirt that you wear a bit oversized, it\u2019s a very authentic and true femininity, you don\u2019t have to scream that you exist, you just live your life.\u201d A romantic notion, indeed.<\/p>\n
