This Silent Mistake Therapists See in Almost Every Couple Says Otherwise

You know how to order their coffee. You can tell by the way they sigh whether they had a rough commute or a rough meeting. After years together, you might even finish their sentences – and feel quietly proud about it. But here is something worth sitting with for a moment: when was the last time you actually asked your partner how they were doing and genuinely waited for the answer? Relationship therapists say that deceptively simple habit – checking in – might be the single most underestimated tool for keeping a couple together.

Why we stop truly talking (even when we think we do)

The New York Times compiled a set of seven questions couples should ask each other on a regular basis to help their relationship last. Two Belgian relationship experts – Alfons Vansteenwegen, a relationship therapist, professor emeritus and author of Staying Connected, and Katrien Koolen, a relationship therapist and author of Love in the Tropics – examined the premise behind those questions and came to the same conclusion: most long-term partners slowly stop having meaningful conversations without even realizing it.

Vansteenwegen has seen between four and eight couples a day over the course of his career as a couples therapist, more than two thousand in total. His observation is blunt: when you are in love, everything feels effortless, but no matter how compatible you and your partner are, differences will always exist – and you have to learn how to navigate them. The problem is that as years pass, real dialogue between partners tends to wither.

Koolen puts it in vivid terms. She compares a relationship to a foreign-language film. You think you follow the plot, but it is only when you read the subtitles that you realize how much you missed. Couples, she argues, need to provide each other with those subtitles regularly – little translations of what is actually happening inside their heads. Because you are never fully your partner’s partner; you become a little more so every single day. And that process requires checking in.

The frozen image trap – and a forest of purple trees

One of the biggest risks in a long relationship, according to Vansteenwegen, is that the mental picture we hold of our partner becomes frozen in place. It can reach a point where one person tells the other: you say white, but I know you mean black – even though, sometimes, they genuinely mean white. That rigid image creates a version of your partner in your mind that may no longer match reality.

Koolen warns against something equally dangerous: letting unspoken thoughts accumulate. In therapy, she uses the metaphor of purple trees. A small thought sprouts in your mind like a tiny purple tree. You say nothing. Week after week, you keep planting more, and suddenly you surprise your partner with an entire purple forest. That is disorienting. Learning that your partner is slightly different from what you imagined is usually manageable, but discovering major changes all at once raises unsettling questions – who are you really, are you someone other than who I always believed you to be? That kind of revelation, she notes, can be deeply destabilizing.

People often say they drifted apart as though it were something that happened to them rather than a process they played an active role in, Koolen adds. In truth, distance creeps into a relationship when you stop seeking each other out and stop talking about what matters. Two people can sit side by side on the couch and still be emotionally miles apart, with no bridge connecting them. Heavy therapeutic conversations are not required all the time – but those subtitles are essential, or you risk missing too much.

How to actually make check-ins work in a busy life

British chef Nadiya Hussain offered a glimpse of what a daily check-in can look like when she revealed on a podcast that she and her husband rate their days together on a scale of one to ten. He might call a day a nine out of ten, while she counters with a six because he was grumpy that afternoon. That near-real-time evaluation may sound extreme, but the underlying principle is sound, according to Vansteenwegen: a relationship is something to take seriously, which means dedicating time to it. We live life at full speed, he explains, so we need to deliberately create conditions for conversation – otherwise we simply stop talking to each other. His practical advice includes preparing a little beforehand, making sure you will not be interrupted, establishing eye contact and tackling one topic at a time.

Koolen acknowledges that between small children, work stress and aging parents who need care, moments for meaningful exchange do not always come naturally. You collapse onto the sofa together, but you are simply too exhausted for a real conversation – or you would rather not have that kind of discussion with toddlers or teenagers within earshot. The format can be flexible, she suggests. Sitting formally at a table with a checklist does not always work. You might just as easily go through a set of questions during a long car ride, on a walk or while organizing the garage together. A bit of physical activity, she believes, helps ease the tension and makes the exchange feel less loaded.

Sometimes it may be worth waiting until you have had time to sort through your own feelings before bringing them up. But caution is warranted, Koolen adds, because waiting too long means those purple trees keep multiplying in silence.

The simplest relationship upgrade you can start tonight

What you now know is something couples therapists see confirmed daily: staying connected is not a passive state, it is an ongoing choice. The person sitting next to you is constantly evolving, and so are you. Regularly checking in – even with something as uncomplicated as asking how your partner is truly doing – keeps the emotional distance from growing unchecked. You do not need a therapist’s office or a formal agenda. A walk, a car ride, an honest moment before sleep. The question is small. The impact, according to the experts who have guided thousands of couples, is anything but.

[3914

You Think You Communicate Well With Your Partner?
